Commercial Description:
Barley Wines are big beers! In fact this is the strongest beer we have ever brewed for our friends here in Wisconsin. This beer is "malt accented" so we searched the world and found the richest, most expensive barley varieties we could find. We bought the best barley available not only here in the United States but in Belgium, Germany and Scotland. You can thank Scottish farmers for growing Golden Promise barley because we used bushels of it in this beer to yield a full and rich flavor. We sourced hops from the United States and Germany but again turned to the UK for our signature hop, "East Kent Golding". This ale is fermented in this bottle and is suitable for laying down. It is so strong that we guess it will continue to improve for years!

(12oz bottle, thanks Barry) Small beige head atop a crystal clear amber body. Aroma is mild, moderately sweet, maple/molasses, caramel, light herbal, alcohol. Taste is moderately sweet, maple, caramel, herbal, light metallic, alcohol. Sticky full body with low carbonation. I am a big fan of New Glarus, and a big fan of barleywines, but for some reason this NG BW does not work for me. So sad.

My sample, courtesy of Duane, was very smooth, almost no head, a slight alcohol burn, followed by malty sweetness, then out of nowhere its very drinkable, Vanilla, yum.I enjoyed this one!

Thanks to joeybgood for this bonus beer!Smelled really strong, like a good barley wine should. Flavor was strong up front and then finished really weak, somewhat dissapointing. Still, not a bad brew.

12oz bottle via trade with robertsreality - Thanks Rob! - Pours a lovely shade of ruby with a short tan head that fades to a film and laces the side of the snifter in an intricate pattern. Aroma is malty, notes of caramel, maple, a touch of citrus, and some cherry all can be found. Flavor is nice caramel malt, maple, brown sugar, some cherry, and a bit of citrus as well. Palate is smooth medium bodied slightly oily and very drinkable. Alcohol is very well covered. Full of flavor and smooth as silk this is another winner from a great brewer!

Thanks Hemmer77. 12oz bottle, served at 45° straight from the cellar, in a Duvel tulip. The color is dull red with a tiny off white head. Strong malt aroma with brown sugar, caramel, light earthy hops, and light fruits. The initial taste is sweet, fruity malt with notes of vanilla. The midtaste is earthy and malty with a moderate hops bitterness that keeps it from being cloying. The mouthfeel is full. This beer doesn’t seem to be just south of 10%. This is a nice, balanced barleywine that seems a bit lacking in flavor.

Thanks to Mr Facto for this! This starts out with a clear, dark orange body that sprouts a creamy off white head that falls quickly. Light fruity aroma, some cherry and malt. Aroma never really picks up much as it warms. Well balanced, with a nice blend of malty sweetness and subdued bitterness. Not as cloying as a J W Lees, not as hoppy as the typical American style BW. Very drinkable but not over the top in any way.

Bottle. My favorite brewer as I began my serious foray into craft beer through New Glarus products at the ripe age of 15. Lots of vanilla and maple syrup lend a note to sweetness above hops, although the hop and alcohol bite catch one at the end. Notes of hazelnut on both the palate and nose. Excellent stuff, and a steal for 7 bucks a six pack. I’ll be ageing.

Purchased a six-pack for $5.99 although MSRP is $7.99 (just wait and see!) Smooth blend of Vanilla, Molasses and Malt. A one or two in a while beer... quite potent! Wonder if it will age well...
