Weak, cherry aroma (didn’t catch much), probably because I didn’t have the right glass. Molasses and dark chocolate flavor. Bitterness grows slightly as the glass empties, with a long-to-diminish toffee finish. Quite creamy and easy to drink. A wonderfully subtle bock. Brigadier (1246), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 16, 2006 Poured dark brown with little head into my snifter. The initial smell was of malt, brown sugar and spices. The flavor was very full - chocolate, roasted malts, brown sugar and a light taste of caramel at the end. Very smooth going down. Another outstanding beer from New Glarus. Sickboy282 (1100), San Diego, California, USA

A huge creamy tan head graces the top and laces on the way down the glass. Aroma is nice creamy chocolate, some toffee, coffee, roasted peanuts, and caramel. Flavor is chocolate, caramel, roasted nuts. A nice lingering roasted malt finish. The real flavor comes out as this warms. It becomes much sweeter. Palate is rich creamy and smooth. Very nice brew.. Slightly sour in the nose with alcohol, toffee, and dark fruits. Malty and evenly balanced, some oxidation in the finish. Medium bodied, just shy of cloying mouthfeel. Not bad overall, but nothing standout. Improved as it warmed from cellar to room temp. CharlesDarwin (1848), Point Judith, Rhode Island, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 10, 2005 Updated: Oct 28, 2009A crystal clear ruddy brown pour, with ruby fringes and an opulent thin coarse tea-stained head. Aroma of caramel, light toast, a touch of kringle, some walnuts and a dash of worcestshire. Rich toasted malty goodness, heavy doses of warm roasted nuts, hazlenuts and macadamias. A freshly baked portugese loaf fresh from the wood-fired oven. Rolling oats and wheat tones, with a lucious wave of brown sugar and a hint of molasses. Tart euro hops dry this brew a bit. Finish is sweet and clinging, with aftertones of frangelico and kahlua. Not burgeoning, not dazzling; a solid middle player. On par for the style for sure.
