Commercial Description:
Available July 2008

"Some people paint, some sing, others write ... I brew." - Daniel Carey

A few times a year, we will cut Dan loose to brew whatever he chooses, uncensored, uncut, unplugged. Always handcrafted, the bottle you hold is brewed for the adventurous soul. This is a very limited edition and we make no promises to ever brew this style again.

Napoleon hailed this tart beer style "the Champagne of the North." A lively and elegant masterpiece this Berliner Weiss is a kaleidoscope of fresh flavor. Barrel fermentation, Pinot Grigio, Riesling grapes and Wisconsin White Wheat are bottle fermented with five proprietary yeast strains. A connoisseur's rare jewel both spirited and subtle, enjoy your sparkling toast under summer stars.

Thanks James for sending me your "advanced copy" of this beer! Hazy golden pour with a nice inch white head that dies down into a rim around the border and offers nice lacing. Nose is lemony, wheaty, and a little funky yeast. I like tytoanderso’s call of "moldy lemon zest"... in a good way, I say. A little old wood in there perhaps as well. A bit less tart on the nose than expected, but the tart dryness does kick in on the end of the taste. Before that, it’s wheaty sour apples and lemon on the palate. Some breadiness behind the tart lemon finish. Lovely. Why don’t more brewers make this style???

Pour is slightly hazy golden with a full white head. Aroma is very strong of wheat and a slight floral character. Flavor is up front tart with lemmon. Other flavors are wheat, bread, and only a hint of hops. Good and smooth brew.

Bottle: Pours a hazy yellow with a white film of head. The aroma has some tart white grape and mild grains- pretty simple. The body is crisp and light, with a solid tartness in the flavor. Has some white wine vinousness, which is followed by some mild, residual grain flavors into the finish. Has the tartness, but lacks and complexity. Still pretty decent.

I’m a noob to this style, but dang I could learn to like these a lot! The aroma on this threw me off initially, as it comes off kindof funky and I almost thought it was a bad beer. Aside from the aroma everything else about this rocks. Flavor is soft, fruity, tart with a medium body, flavor almost comes off as champagne like. Palate on this is super clean, like drinking a glass of water. I liked this a lot and this is going to be my next homebrewing project.

Bottle, pilsner glass. Pale gold, slightly hazy, sparkling bubbles lazily make their way to the surface. A white head begins thinnish, but doesn’t lose what thickness it has, thanks to the ongoing effervescence. Aromas of yeast, gumball, and lemons. Initially, flavor is lemon sweet-sourness, with a hint of gumball. Big sour vinous flavors ensue while the carbonation sparkles over the tongue. This lasts a while before fading to a wheaty finish with yeasty overtones and a chalky mouthfeel. In so many ways, this is like Sweet Tarts candy in a glass. Definitely a Yum if not quite a Wow.
