| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Oct 4, 2006 12 oz bottle. Clear burgundy. Leaves a tan ring and some fuzz. Earthy cherry nose; subtle but intoxicating. Concord grape and molasses as it warms. Tight fizziness then fruity with cherry skins and apricots. Dries with some coffee. Medium, glossy body. A stouty fruit beer? Quite good, with the wonderful NG cherries. I hoped for a little more stout presence. grimreeser (797), Minnesota, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Sep 28, 2006 Pours a dark dark reddish brown that lets a little light through, smallish head. Aroma of cherries and roasted malt. Flavor is very sweet with tartness coming though in the end. Very nice. beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Sep 25, 2006 Browned ruby cola color with a soft, loosely set dark ivory top of pinky high stature. Minimal lacing in a couple squiggly strings and dots.
Aroma is dark cherry sweet and vanilla with a soda-esk effervescence. More like a malted beverage type of aroma then beer related.
Same goes for the taste, very soda, malt beverage like, overly sweet and cherry soaked with an unbalanced character that doesn’t seem all that stout-like in character. Sweet and tangy with that certain tart cherry bite with no real mellow tones or subtleness. Its broad and rich with cherry. Unfavorably, however; and impartial to the buds. A nice experiment, but nothing to seek out or get worked up about. Unless sour cherry stuff is your thing, then by all means, this beer will suit your tastes just right.
Feel is deeply soured with cherry tartness and no balance within a slick, tart grabbing light/medium body.
I could hardly bring myself to drink it. Far too sweet and cola, malt beverage-like. How sad, I usually like New Glarus offerings, but this was a huge surprising disappointment. Bluck... kramer (2510), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Sep 16, 2006 12 oz bottle, via JCapriotti. Pours a clear dark brown body under a small creamy film of light brown head. Aroma has a great natural cherry scent over a roasted and lightly burnt malt base. Lightly tart, with some oak, and not wholly unlike Belgian Red. The flavor is just awesome. Definately the best fruited stout I’ve ever had. Great tart cherry with lots of oak and roast. What an awesome combination. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with a slightly sticky finish. Carbonation is moderate with a slightly fizzy feel. This beer is just simply awesome. Belgian Red treatment on a Stout, what a great idea.
