Commercial Description:
Seventh in our series, this is Dan's Gold Medal winning "Unplugged Cherry Stout." This ale is aged in Oak barrels to promote the spontaneous fermentation. Eight Wisconsin malted barleys combined with Wisconsin Montmorency Cherries make for a complex and sublime taste experience that you may never find again.

RooftopRogue brought this bottle to share at a small tasting. Poured a very deep red color. Woody, earthy aroma. Lots of cherry flavor comes through along with a decent malt backbone. A pretty good fruit beer.

Bottle pours a nice very dark red, nearly black. A medium sized tan head sits atop. The aroma is strong cherry, and an almost vanilla cream-like dimension. The flavor was strong on the cherry at first, much like their Belgian Red, but soon the strong chocolate set in, and it balanced quite nicely. I can see why some would say the cherry was overdone, but for my personal tatses, I was quite pleased.

Big props to Moejuck for trading me this baby. Helluva beer here. Nice aroma of whiskey, oak, vanilla, and some slight cherries along with a sweetness I couldn’t put my finger on. Appearance was a nice chesnut reddish/brown, one finger creamy head that went rather quickly. Mouthfeel is a little thick but not a good thick, more sweet thick as in cloying and coating. Flavors were sweet malts, tart cherried (reminded me slightly of the Duchesse Du Borgogne), oak, earthy, and slightly whiskey like. Overall an enjoyable beer but I’d be hard pressed to classify this as a stout. Perhaps that’s what they were shooting for but it comes up well short. Not to say it’s not great because it was definitely great stuff.

Nowhere near the quality of Bells but still a good brew. A bit of bitter dark chocolate and roasted malts butthe cherry was not that good. I am a little put off by this.

This beer is just crazy...I’ve had it twice with two totally different experiences. Pours black with no head. Aroma is chocolate...tons of chocolate...and a little bit of feet and cherries. Flavor is exactly the same...except one time the feet weren’t there and the balance was beautiful...and the other time the feet were there and it made the cherry flavor taste artificial. Mouthfeel is surprisingly a bit wattery. I’ll give it marks based on the time I enjoyed it.

Not much head on this one, but when it was there it had a dark red hue. Bubbly head almost spritzer like. Now I wouldn’t say this is a stout, it sure is tasty. A wonderful cherry taste that is nicely balanced with the chocolate malt. It doesn’t have much body but it is one of the better beers that I have had lately. Found this in a little local bar in New Glarus called Sportsman’s Bar & Grill. This place had the only Unplugged series in town. Great place to get a good cheap meal.

8/4/06 Pours black with a reddish tint and a small head. The aromas are magnificent together, chocolate, cherry, and raspberry. At first sip its almost like a fruit beer lots of cherry tartness at the front of the tongue that fades into a roasted chocolate flavor that lingers. The body is thin and it is not very stout like but it doesn’t matter for this delicious chocolate cherry desert. 9/4/9/4/17 = 4.3

I’ve been holding onto this last bottle of mine for quite some time. Looking at it recently I thought two things, why haven’t I drank this, and it must have gone down hill by now. Well it is time to open up this treat, and upon my first sniff, I don’t think it has gone downhill. Pours a dark brown black with a beige head that is nearly a film. Nose is lots of sour cherries and browned old cherries with brown sugar. It almost seems like an old cherry jam. Those sour browned cherry and cherry pit flavors are balanced with brown sugar, toffee malts and a touch of chocolate. Not much chocolate at all is left here. The tartness of the cherries and brown sugar/toffee malts go so well together. I still really enjoy this one. I just wish I could find another bottle. 9/4/9/3/16 = 4.1

This is more like a cherry beer with a bit of stout added instead the other way around. In fact, it gets everything wrong - Too thin bodied, too tart, too much cherry, not enough malt or hops. Man is it good, though. Cherry with a hint chocolate malts and insanely drinkable and refreshing. Misnamed, perhaps, but a winner.
