Commercial Description:
This Eisbock was lagered a full year and then frozen to incomparable smoothness. This is a big and complex beer, suitable for laying down or consuming immediately, serve at 55 degrees Fahrenheit. A few times a year, we will cut Dan Carey loose to brew whatever he chooses, uncensored, uncut, UNPLUGGED. Always handcrafted, the bottle you hold is brewed for the adventurous soul. This is a very limited edition and we make no promises to ever brew this style again. Eisbock is the first of our Unplugged series of beers.

Dark amber/mahogany with no head whatsoever. Aroma is very sweet, caramel up front with lots of roasted grain and nuts, some dark fruits (cherry and prune) and tiny bit of alcohol. Flavor much the same, tons of sweet caarmel malt initially followed by prune, cherry, and roasted nuts/grain. As it warms roastiness and prune come through even more, with some residuel sugar. Mouthfeel is balanced between sticky and oily. Very well done, glad I hung onto a bottle for sure.

Bottle courtesy of Styles: Dark amber that shines deep, clear mohogany when held up to the light. There’s a small beige head that quickly disapates without leaving lacing or a ring. The aroma is malty, medium sweet, with notes of caramel, bread, apples, grapes, plums, raisins. Taste is malty caramel, bread crust, raisins, ripe plums, and some lightly sweet dark fruit. Light to medium bodied, mild carbonation, watery in the mouth. I like the flavors of this beer, but the palate is just too watery and thin throughout. My guess would be that it seems to be quite filtered and perhaps that affecting both head and body.

An amber beer with a thick orange head. The aroma is sweet with notes of chocolate, alcohol, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of wood, alcohol, and caramel, as well as some hints of over ripe fruits. Nice one.

12 oz. bottle. Light ruby with a small white head that faded to nothing quickly. Nose is big with aromas of a lot of sweet, fruity malt (raisins, candied plums). Flavor is raisins, molasses, caramel and malt with a bitter hops background. Finish is sweet and nutty. Nice thick mouth feel but a bit heavy on the carbonation, still very good. First beer I’ve had in this style and I like it.

Beer #50 (boy am I new at this rating thing). This may have been the last bottle available for purchase in WI several weeks ago. I’ve been told by Dan Carey (brewer and founder of NG) that Discount Liquor in Milwaukee may still have a few. This reminded me of essentially a barleywine without the hops. The richness, caramel, and sweetness was there, just not the hop backbone. Its hard to taste this without expecting some hoppiness on the finish. Lots of malt, however, with a bit of yeast giving it a darker bread profile. Stewed apples and caramel on the palate, with some nutty notes as well. While this was great stuff, Kuhnhenn Raspberry Eisbock blew it away in terms of mouthfeel and complexity.
