Light bread-dough scent with maple syrup. Sweet, complex and interesting aroma. Caramel malty taste, I can feel alcohol in my nose when I taste. Medium bodied with a nice smooth and a little bit sweet finish.

Thick tan head of dense foam quickly fades to a thin ring, as expected. Aromas are sweet sugar and molasses, light maple, hints of soy; patriarch tobacco touches like yesterday’s smoke rings. The body is slick but medium-light. Tanned leather, more tobacco, anise, allspice. So smooth and all the flavors and aromas are wonderfully integrated. Thanks for this treat, Matt! | 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Mar 24, 2005 Incredible. Glad I was able to get my hands on one of these before it’s extinct. Pours medium tinted, radiant brown with a thick, 1" foamy head. Smells very malty with a discernable alcohol presence. Taste is all encompassing - bright, lively caramel and roasted malts. Slightly oaky, with a tobacco edge and burnt aftertaste. Gets a little more acidic and syrupy as it warms. This is a great winter warmer, but I’d be willing to drink it during any season. I know, some sacrifice, right? SpecialSauce (47), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Mar 14, 2005 This beer is all about roasted barley, with notes of caramel and malt. Really a fantastic beer, my favorite unplugged to date. The palette suits the flavors, moderately tight. Gurst (338), Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 14, 2005 The uncut, unfiltered, unplugged nature shines through with yet another quality beer from New Glarus. A subtle barley aroma gives way to a full-on barley saturation of taste. Rich, hearty, roasted tastes are the name of the game here, not a single hint of bitterness. So savory, I couldn’t finish the one glass. Prostman (1077), Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 5, 2005 This was a really great beer. It poured a nice deep chestnut color with a tan colored head. The flavor was roasty, with some caramel hints and the alcohol is well hidden. Recommended. Indy (87), Hopkins, Minnesota, USA
