picking sweaty leather in the aroma along with the strong sour fruits,
incredible rich fruity tart cherry and green apple flavor, the chocolate has receeded into the background to allow the tart fruits to take center stage, the tartness is perfectly balanced with some sweetness from the rich malt backbone,

Aug 31, 2008 bottle scribbled with "07" from footy... pours a cloudy rich mahogany amber color which appears purple from a distance. it’s topped by a small off white head which fades away quickly. the aroma is a bit musty... mixed with green apples, cinnamon, black peppercorns and wood. the flavor is... rich and intense... like tart cherry and apple pie. there’s vanilla, graham cracker dough maltiness, cinnamon, wood and sweetened cooked cherries. it’s definitely tart but no where near sour or vinegary. as it warms the tartness even disappears to unveil it’s malty foundation. the aftertaste is full of cinnamon and cherry skin tannins. medium body. smooooth texture due to the near lack of carbonation when warm... what is it with these guys and kick ass fruit beers?...

Aug 22, 2008 The pour reveals a murky brown color with a thin beige head. Solid, complex aroma of vanilla, wood, cherries, some other fruits, it’s quite sour too. The first sip feels like an explosion of happyness, it’s sour allright, there’s wood, vanilla, cherries and other fruits, maybe apples. The body is light with a slightly oily texture and gentle carbonation. After every sip, I feel the urge to lick the inside of my mouth so I can get the most from this wonderfull beer.

Aug 9, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Enigma pours a slightly hazy brown color with a hint of red and a small off white head. The aroma and flavor share almost the same qualities: Cherries, apples, vanilla, oak, and an acidic touch. The beer is listed as a sour and it does have some sour/tartness to it, but it is not over the top. Everything works pretty well together. This is very smooth drinking and full bodied at the same time. Very similar to the Belgian Red which I like alot. Yet another solid beer from New Glarus.

Jul 8, 2008 12 oz. bottle with a special thank you to Secret Santa (Christmas) for sending me this one. Pours a cloudy dark amber with a very thin off-white head that completely disappeared after the first sip. Very pleasant aroma of sour cherries, grapes, and apples. The flavor is equally enjoyable with both sweet and sour cherries in good proportion, grapes, and apples. Some oak in the flavor as well. Very mild bitterness at the finish. While I would not call myself a sourhead, I certainly enjoyed this beer.

Jul 5, 2008 Unplugged Enigma, released October 2, 2006. Not from the unmarked previous batches.
Poured a murky reddish brown color, with a good off white colored head with surprisingly, good retention. Smell is of oak, vanilla, subdued cherries, sour apples, and a hint of bourbon. Taste starts off sour, but slowly and seamlessly transfers into an oaky, vanilla, boubon finish. There is tartness throughout the taste, but everything is blended together so nicely that there didn’t seem to be an overpowering flavor, all parts were seemingly equal. Medium bodied, lower carbonation, little bit of a dry oaky finish. Drinkability is good in the sense that it’s a pleasure to drink, but I felt this one is a sipper. Try it before it runs out again.
