Commercial Description:
This beer was inspired by the writings of Graham Wheeler, a noted English Beer Historian. Mr. Wheeler describes the original Porters as: "... the least understood of the old British beers. The subject (of the Porter Beer Style) is complicated and confused because porter’s heyday lasted from about 1700 to the pale ale revolution of the mid 1800’s. During that time it passed through many transformations. Porter was simply a mixture of two brown beers. The only characteristic that set the porter apart from any other beer of the day was that porter was deliberately soured by adding a percentage of sour beer to freshly brewed beer. The original porters were not, as is commonly supposed, jet-black in colour, but a translucent brown. They had a rich, smoky flavor derived from the use of brown malt and a winey aftertang produced by the deliberate souring, highly regarded by Londoners." Our interpretations is a Brown Porter based on the style popular in 1870’s London. It was brewed with mostly floor malted English malts including the famed pale ale malt, Maris Otter. A touch of smoked malt produced by Briess Malting Company of Chilton Wisconsin was also used. Half of the batch went through a souring fermentation, in the traditional way, to promote the characteristic wine-like acidity. Lastly the beer was aged on wood to extract sweetness from toasted oak.

This bottled brew from a rating party poured a medium sized head of foamy finely sized tan colored bubbles that were and left behind a transparent strongly carbonated brown colored body. The complex aroma was malty and mild smoky. The crisp mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish with a biting aftertaste. The flavor contained notes of sour smoky and tart. Delicious and one I would certainly like to have again.

Bottle, generously sent by CanIHave4Beers. First off, this tastes nothing like Olde English. That said, it still drinks pretty good. Pours like a glass of tea, clear brown, but with an added small bubbly head. Nothing much to look at, really. Nose is a touch woody, malty, roasty, and sour. Hint of smoke. Taste adds crazy tartness, some lactic, some cherry skins. The closest I can compare it to is something like a Rodenbach on the palate, yet totally different. Complex and lively on the palate. This is a wonderful beer.

Very dark brown with mushroom cloud, that leaves a faric of white thick lace. Bold malty, and sour aroma. The mouthfeel is creamy. Taste is sourish, very different porter.Good sourness, almost like you take a red flemish.

12 oz bottle. Pours a reddish mahogany color. Aroma is sour and juicy, with some malt as well. Flavor is an intense sourness that rounds off into a malt profile in the middle, and ends with chocolate notes. Light-bodied for a porter. Very lively mouthfeel on this one, works well with the sour profile. Overall I found this to be an unexpected treat. It wasn’t what I expected from a porter at all, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

aroma is of BBQ smoke and soft chocolate roast. appearance is quite dark yet translucent amber/brown. flavor is flawless marriage of smoke and roast that equals salty soy sauce and cocoa nibs. sourness comes in tidal waves presenting a nearly grape soda sweetness with mind altering sourness, not intense but so defined and strange in the context its hard to get your head around it. soy note becomes apparent in aroma after a few samples. a bizarre yet utterly enjoyable combination of elements in a single beer...however in the end the sourness begins to overwhelm the other elements, scaling that back a touch would make this a masterpiece

Bottle: pours a beautiful dark ice tea brown with a small tan head that goes quickly. Aroma is interesting with some sourness slight roast and a little smokiness, under that is a very nice chocolate. This smells just like my old english porter. Flavor is quick tart sourness that dominates at first, then a very little roast comes and a touch of the chocolate. Finishs tart and dry. Even with the odd sourness i really enjoy this beer as I drink it. Im back already to add to my rating. This beer warms up and turns to someting amazing. I get the slight oak now and an awesom caramel maltness both aroma and taste i also get some fruity esters that are so inviting. All and all this beer is awesome and grew on me for sure.

Bottle. Pours a clear pale brown color with a light foamy head. First impression was wait a minute, is this actually the right beer? Flavor is mildly roasted and smoky malt, but the sour flavors are uber prominent. Almost like a berliner weisse beer in it’s sourness. Not exactly sure what to make of this, it comes across to me as a sour mess.

Pours a clear nutty brown with a very light coating of white head that quickly dissipates. Aroma is a bit sour with nuts and cherry present. Flavor is a sour nutty malt with alcohol undertones and mix of cherry and vanilla. Body is light with light carbonation. Interesting
