Commercial Description:
This beer was inspired by the writings of Graham Wheeler, a noted English Beer Historian. Mr. Wheeler describes the original Porters as: "... the least understood of the old British beers. The subject (of the Porter Beer Style) is complicated and confused because porter’s heyday lasted from about 1700 to the pale ale revolution of the mid 1800’s. During that time it passed through many transformations. Porter was simply a mixture of two brown beers. The only characteristic that set the porter apart from any other beer of the day was that porter was deliberately soured by adding a percentage of sour beer to freshly brewed beer. The original porters were not, as is commonly supposed, jet-black in colour, but a translucent brown. They had a rich, smoky flavor derived from the use of brown malt and a winey aftertang produced by the deliberate souring, highly regarded by Londoners." Our interpretations is a Brown Porter based on the style popular in 1870’s London. It was brewed with mostly floor malted English malts including the famed pale ale malt, Maris Otter. A touch of smoked malt produced by Briess Malting Company of Chilton Wisconsin was also used. Half of the batch went through a souring fermentation, in the traditional way, to promote the characteristic wine-like acidity. Lastly the beer was aged on wood to extract sweetness from toasted oak.

12oz bottle thanks to Pantanap. Man I love this beer. The nose is mostly sour cherry and light roast. The flavor is just mind blowing. Sour cherry and some light acidity up front that gives way to a big chewy malt center and great porter roastiness. Finishes clean with very little sourness and a fantastic roasted milk chocolate aftertaste lingers. So damn good.

The first time I tried this one I did not really enjoy it, but this has grown on me. Really interesting nose on this one. Roasted nutty notes, chocolate, and coffee with a tartness that is throughout. Brown pour, red hues, light fizzy beige head. Tart initially followed by roasted malts, then more vinegar tartness. Coffee shows up as does light chocolate and nutty notes too. Clean tartness in the finish almost cleanses the palate, as some light dry roast does linger for a bit. Lively fizzy carb. Interesting.

Thanks to allendodd for this beauty. Pours a very dark brown with some ruby glints. Head is sort of yellowish, and not tall. Aroma is like sour dark malt. Medium plus body with spritely carbonation. It’s a woody, sour beer. Makes me think of that Greene King Suffolk Ale, but that’s not sour? Really tart oak/wood. I am so amazed and pleased. Finishes with a hint of chocolate. It does finish acid. Had I known how good this was, I would have shared it.

Bottle courtesy of BMan1113VR. Clear dark orange coloring. Tart elements are buried within the overtones of coffee roast. Flavors of tart bitter show up first. Lighter coffee notes are present as well but not as prominent as expected. Sweet chocolate merely an afterthought.

Bottled sample via Dalzale, and shared with oakbluff. Pale brown in colour with fairly strong carbonation. Aromas are of funk, cherry pits, flowers, maple syrup, and a bit of chocolate. Quite acidic in the mouth with more wild + sour fruit flavors upfront, before some sweeter chocolate fudge, roasted nut, and cherry flavors take over. Light bodied for what most would consider for a porter, but then again, this isn’t intended to be a run of the mill early 21st century porter anyway. Very interesting and somewhat difficult to rate. The 12 oz bottle shared between two people was about as much of this beer as I’d want to drink at one sitting, but it was still a pleasent experience.

Poured dark brown with a huge head and an awesome coffee and chocolate aroma. Flavor was slightly sour with strong coffee notes, very unique. Overall a nice aroma and interesting flavor although a little too sour, good beer.

OK - so all old English style porters were a blend of soured and fresh beer. A little beer education comes to me today. First off, I love this beer. It pours a deep, clear mahogany with a big head. The nose is the cherry tartness of the sour with some caramel backing. The first taste is clearly the cherry tartness but is followed a caramel flavor that is as clearly pronounced as I can remember in a beer. That sweetness is followed by a big smokey flavor and all of it is mixed in with the big acidic bitterness. This is very good and yet another minor masterpiece by this brewery. Too bad this one might not be around forever.
