Pours pretty near black with a good looking head and very dense lacing. The aroma is meaty enough, I suppose, with hints at earth, nutshells, and coffee. The mouthfeel is surprisingly light for a porter, but it works all right here. Dark chocolate and tame coffee mix well with the meat flavor. The finish is the best thing about this beer. It is creamy with a strangely sweet smokiness that I’m really digging along with a bit of ash. I really like this beer, but it needs more smoke. Theis (3792), Denmark

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Sep 7, 2008 A black appearance with a beige head. The aroma is smokey with some charcoal, coffee, and chocolate. The flavor is also smokey with some hints of bacon and coffee. The finish is rather bitter. I love smoked beers in moderation and this one was well done. GMCC2181 (883), Bear/Elkton, Delaware, USA

Big head that took a while to settle. Color is dark black. Taste is roasted malt, hint of chocolate and smoke. Very smooth, low carbonation. Good beer. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA

Pours almost black with a bit of light getting through and a beige head. Smell is nicely smoky, but it mixes and mingles well with a roasted coffee flavor. Nice. Taste is nicely rich and malty with light smokiness and coffee flavor. Some lingering light smoke in the finish. Average body and carbonation. Really a solid smoked beer, and quite enjoyable. hellbilly (1566), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 2, 2008 bottle from the bockeyhorseys... pours barely transparent ruby black with a light hot cocoa colored head and lots of drippy lacing. aroma is surprisingly full of vanilla and fudgey chocolate in front of mellow (should have figured apple wood) campfire woody char and some sourness from it. the flavor is very controlled... not overly smoked so that nothing else is tasted. chocolate, roasty/malty grain, some lemon or grapefruit, a little bit of spice and a tart smoky finish. lightly smoked chocolate makes it’s way into the aftertaste. this is one of the softest, subtle, least ’meaty’ smoked beers i’ve had. medium body with a great mouth feel... so creamy from the smooth carbonation... | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Sep 1, 2008 Pours a very dark brown in color with a nice inch of head forming on the pour. Smell is roasty smoke flavor. Taste is more of the same. But it’s not a campfire smoky flavor. This is a nice roasty, smoked meat kind of flavor. And it’s done incredibly well. Decent mouthfeel. One of the better smoked beers that I’ve had.
