Thanks to badbeer. Pours deep, dark brown color with a somewhat thin but resilient off-white head. Head is somewhat sticky and leaves a bit of lace down the glass. I could smell the smoke as I opened it on the counter. That’s about all that I get is smokey with a faint maltiness. Awesome. The taste is the best part. This beer explodes with flavor as it crosses my lips. Lots of smoke and super toasty malts abound on this one. The mouthfeel is the second best part, the carbonation is vibrant and active. It helps to move the flavors around my mouth. This beer is full bodied too, more than any other porter I’ve ever had. More on the way and I can’t wait. incutrav (577), Woodbury, Minnesota, USA

Really needs to be enjoyed at close to room temp, as i detected very little smokieness when cold. Dark and roasty, with enough smoke aroma and flavor, but not overpowering. Actually would like to see more smoke flavor in there. Awfully thin on the ol pallate, surprising, but still a great brew.BEST SMOKED BEER-hands down. This stuff is SMOKEY. Nose is smoke. Has notes of alder, pine, manzanita, bamboo, redwood and oak. Seriously - I have BBQ’d with all of these woods and I know their characteristics. They are all here. Ends on a nice, dry note. I think I need a growler of this stuff. prosqtor (408), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA

From the bottle, courtesy of Mrs. ProsQtor -- who had to listen to a litany of gripes about the day, and then provided this unexpected lift. Among the best Porters I’ve tasted. Perfect for a snowy night. Eyedrinkale (3209), Astoria, New York, USA

Pours dark brown (almost black) with a thin dissipating light brown head. Smells of pronounced smoke, chocolate, touches of honey and caramel. Tastes slightly tarte with a nice underlying smokiness, lots of spices, thick layered dark malt, hints of coffee and a touch of bitterness. Mouthfeel is full and textured. Finish reveals hints of burnt molasses. Wow! JPDIPSO (4944), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Nov 9, 2007 Very dark brown color with a thin, stable lid of dark beige bubbles. Light aromas of smoke enveloped by dark chocolate, roasted malts and pale malts. A smooth subtle scent that just begs for a smoke sausage, grilled meats or a peasant feast. Very smooth and creamy feel. This feels like a perfect cask ale, smooth with a small bubbles gliding the liquid across the tongue. Starts out quite dry with roasted malts. Middle is full of dark caramel, full malt sweetness and a touch of herbal hops. Linger is solid with the full malt spectrum, from pale to roasted, with toasted in between. While I wouldn’t mind a touch more smoke, this is another great brew from New Glarus.
