hamrech (22), Carbondale, Illinois, USA Nov 6, 2009 I have a cold so maybe it’s not the best time to be reviewing beers, but such is life sometimes. I haven’t been too keen on the basic New Hollands I’ve tried, but I decided to try out something by them that was a little bigger. Can’t smell it that well but it’s sort of sickly sweet, which to me is a bad sign for trippels as they are often too sweet for me. Flavor is better than the smell though, it’s just sweet enough to mask the 9% and still has a nice slight boozy bite to it. Not the best flavor, but very balanced. Nice light-golden color, but nothing too interesting to speak of with that or the mouth. I’m not terribly experienced with trippels and have mixed feelings about them, but this is pretty solid although not worth the price tag. beernovice39 (237), South Carolina, USA Oct 21, 2009 Fruity smell and taste...not my thing at all! Gave to the wife you enjoyed the whole bottle minus my taste. Ratings are hers. durhambeer (1186), Durham, USA Oct 5, 2009 Sampled at the World Beer Fest in Durham. Pours yellow/ light orange with small white head. Aroma is citrusy with yeasty and bready notes. More wheaty than some tripels. Sweet and floral. Average. danielcurtis81 (868), San Diego, California, USA Sep 13, 2009 BPW #69
On tap at New Holland Brewing Company. Appearance is a straw gold with a thin white head. Not sure what the story is with the Black Tulip name since the appearance is quite different. The flavors and aromas are nice Belgium yeast and a decent malt profile. Very dry mouth.
DragonStout (1380), Pataskala, Ohio, USA Sep 13, 2009 Pours golden with a nice sweet nose.Flavors of sweet fruit with some breadiness.A nice easy drining beer that hides the alcohol well. awiseman01 (318), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA Sep 11, 2009 Dan’s Bachelor Party Extended Weekend Rating #67 of 90. On tap at New Holland in Holland, MI. Pours slightly cloudy pale yellow. Nice sweet fruity wheat style. Above average IMHO. bubbleflubber (885), Collinsville, Virginia, USA Sep 5, 2009 Pours hazy golden into the glass, with a reductive soapy head that leaves sparse lace. The nose is of spices, yeast and candied sugars. The flavors have a lot of the candi sugars and hints of esters upfront, with some yeast hitting the mid-palate, and hints of alcohol and spices and bitter hops culminating the finish. The mouthfeel is smooth, with zesty carbonation levels. The body in comparison to the flavors going on, unfortunately, throws this one a little out of whack. It’s just not completely linear from beginning to end. Nice offering, just not top-tier. jodah52 (47), Michigan, USA Aug 26, 2009 A deep gold trippel with a small white head. Powerful flavors of candi sugar, with supporting bitterness. Sweet and bitter at the same time, with strong floral aromas. These aromas are the distinguishing feature of the beer; the result is quite good, though less than spectacular.
