Commercial Description:
Since the early 1600's, the Dutch have attempted to breed a pure black tulip. Many have tried and a few have come close...but none have succeeded. Call it the Holy Grail of the tulip world. In honor of this elusive flower we have brewed this special elixir. We have combined the finest Belgian malt, rare European hops, an authentic Belgian yeast and finally, the brew is dusted with tulip petals. The resulting blend is nothing less than magical.

I had this bee on tap and it’s starting to grow on me. Pours a light, hazy orange color. As an aparent yeast flavo with a balanced malt flavor. Flows like silk with a lingering finish. The lace that it leaves on the glass is amazing.

Pours a straw color with medium white head that fades quickly. Aroma of light fruit and some yeastiness. Taste is much the same with light fruit (pear and apple) but also bit bitter for a tripel. Moderate carbonation. This beer just wasn’t enjoyable for me as I have had many more impressive tripels. Meh.

Spicy nose of cereal, apples, pears, and berries. The brew pours a hazy ruddy amber with blonde highlights and floaties. The white frothy head is thin and quick. The start is malty and sweet. Light acidity and warmth dominate the middle. The grainy finish is sweet. The medium body is creamy and soft.

Bottle purchased at Binny’s Beverage Depot in Downtown Chicago. Pours sparkling yellow with a small fizzy white head, mostly diminishing, spare lacing. Aroma is average malt (grain, straw), average hops (herbs, grass), average yeast (sweat, barnyard) with notes of grape and wine. Medium bodied, creamy texture, soft carbonation and a metallic finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, acidity and bitterness.

Appears a semi-transparent gold with mild CO2 rising to the top. A 2 finger, creamy white head slowly fades out. Scattered lacing is left around the glass. Smell is of fresh yeast, candy sugar, papaya, large amounts of fusel alcohol with notes of tangerine and vanilla. Taste is semi-sweet up front with vanilla, citrus, and dough melding to a gently hopped brew with some wood-like tannins running straight for the back of the throat. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, semi-sweet, along with a strange wood-like bitterness that leads to a bone dry finish with slightly evident abv. Overall, not bad but it didn’t blow me away either. It left a a lingering taste in my mouth like a cough drop would.

Pours a bright and clear orange copper color, moderately effervescent but next to no head - just flecks of foam here and there. These flecks (I’m assuming) contribute precious little blotchy lacing. Initial aroma was very much like a generic macrolager. Not complex, not distinct, and not really inviting. Subsequent sniffs yielded some mild sweet malt and a little bread yeast. The flavor is tart, no, make that bitter orange. Bitter orange peel, bitter orange juice (like those damned little cans - remember those?), and bitter orange liquer in the finish. A dry orange vodka with some pine, or perhaps its an orange flavored gin/juniper, persists in the aftertaste. Then (finally) there’s a mild honeymalt behind that. What can I say? This beer had potential to be quite interesting with the tart orange bitterness, but unfortunately it was way overdone, and the malt was nearly absent. A little thin in the body, mild carbonation, a little too alcoholic, and way out of balance. Bump up the terminal gravity to increase body, balance the bitterness, and cancel some residual alcohol, and it would be a really nice beer, however.
