Commercial Description:
Since the early 1600's, the Dutch have attempted to breed a pure black tulip. Many have tried and a few have come close...but none have succeeded. Call it the Holy Grail of the tulip world. In honor of this elusive flower we have brewed this special elixir. We have combined the finest Belgian malt, rare European hops, an authentic Belgian yeast and finally, the brew is dusted with tulip petals. The resulting blend is nothing less than magical.

A golden hue with a small white small head. A caramel aroma with strong alcohol. The malts flood the taste buds with some toffee and alcohol. Very sweet with a bitterness in the aftertaste. A nice smooth soft palate with nice carbonation.

Draught at TJ’s: Aroma of Belgian yeast, slight spices, and light Belgian malts. Poured amber/gold in color with a medium-sized, off-white head that lasted throughout. Clear. Sparkling. Flavor is medium sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of Belgian yeast, Belgian malts, and light hops. Medium body. Lightly dry texture. Average carbonation. Belgian yeast and light hop finish is medium sweet and lightly bitter. 9%ABV is completely hidden.

bottle shared by beth and anand- THANKS. pours a hazy yellow with a small white head. Notes of mellon, candy, fruit, booze. A little musty and too sweet. and the boozy candied rotten fruit presence makes it tough to drink a lot of this.

From a 22 oz bottle courtesy of Strykzone this poured a yellow-orange with a medium sized white head and thick and sticky lacing rings. Nose of ripe fruit and yeast. Medium mouthfeel. Flavor is fairly mild with nuances of flowers and fruit, and the finish is lightly dry and bitter.

I have a cold so maybe it’s not the best time to be reviewing beers, but such is life sometimes. I haven’t been too keen on the basic New Hollands I’ve tried, but I decided to try out something by them that was a little bigger. Can’t smell it that well but it’s sort of sickly sweet, which to me is a bad sign for trippels as they are often too sweet for me. Flavor is better than the smell though, it’s just sweet enough to mask the 9% and still has a nice slight boozy bite to it. Not the best flavor, but very balanced. Nice light-golden color, but nothing too interesting to speak of with that or the mouth. I’m not terribly experienced with trippels and have mixed feelings about them, but this is pretty solid although not worth the price tag.

Fruity smell and taste...not my thing at all! Gave to the wife you enjoyed the whole bottle minus my taste. Ratings are hers.

Sampled at the World Beer Fest in Durham. Pours yellow/ light orange with small white head. Aroma is citrusy with yeasty and bready notes. More wheaty than some tripels. Sweet and floral. Average.

BPW #69 On tap at New Holland Brewing Company. Appearance is a straw gold with a thin white head. Not sure what the story is with the Black Tulip name since the appearance is quite different. The flavors and aromas are nice Belgium yeast and a decent malt profile. Very dry mouth.

Pours golden with a nice sweet nose.Flavors of sweet fruit with some breadiness.A nice easy drining beer that hides the alcohol well.
