Commercial Description:
Since the early 1600's, the Dutch have attempted to breed a pure black tulip. Many have tried and a few have come close...but none have succeeded. Call it the Holy Grail of the tulip world. In honor of this elusive flower we have brewed this special elixir. We have combined the finest Belgian malt, rare European hops, an authentic Belgian yeast and finally, the brew is dusted with tulip petals. The resulting blend is nothing less than magical.

Bottle, purchased July ’05. I keep focusing on the name and being surprised when this pours out a nice golden color, with a blush of red in the center. Aroma is a light syrup with overtones of medicinal alcohol. Extra strong taste, but not as “beery” as might be expected. Strange rubbery aftertaste, with notes of pear and apricot, then a strong suggestion of honey. My label does not mention the tulip petals, certainly can’t get any suggestion of it in this batch. Despite the distractions mentioned here, it’s a fine, heady drink, at least pleasing to the eye.

Bottle. I think this beer is extremely underrated. Clear copperish golden pour with a beatiful pillowy white head and gorgeous lacing. Aroma came through with some unexpected floral hops, caramel malt, yeast, and banana notes. Flavor was overall sweet but slightly set off by a little bitterness. Palate is silky smooth, mild carbonation, and very drinkable. It blows my mind that this receives a 3.33 and a 72 percentile overall. It deserves better especially when comparing it to Unibroue La Fin Du Monde.

Sampled from bottle: Beer pours a clear amber colour with a fairly large off white head. Aroma is sweet, carmel, toffee, bannana and oranges. Mouthfeel is full, well carbonated. Taste is a tad on the sweet side, takes no time in hiding the evident alcohol taste.

Golden, deep at the center, creamy white head. Rich malty, fruit and belgian yeast with some grassy hop character. Creamy full palate.

Small sample from the bottle. Consumed during the New Holland beer and chocolate pairing at Great Taste of the Midwest on 8-9-2008. Pours a bright, clear gold with a small amount of near-white head. Aroma features salt, apple, white grape juice, and spice (especially cinnamon and coriander) scents. Nice, spicy flavor contains the elements of the aroma plus ginger. Medium body. Soft. Easy to drink. Quite good.

Cloudy amber pour. Aroma of sweet malt and some light hops. Taste is fruity, malty, molasses. I don’t find much of the hop bitterness.
