Dary Ruby in color, scent of cherry, caramel and malt flavor, rather easy drinking

bottle. Hazy dark red pour with a modest tan head which I had to create with a violent dumping of the last half. The most prominent aspect of the aroma is the soda-syrup sweetness with some more bitter semi-plastic notes and also hints of grain. It’s much thinner in the mouth than I was expecting. It hits with a mild, sour, doughiness and washes away flat with a lifeless body and very low carbonation. The finish stirs up a little walnut-bitterness and some dustiness, maybe a suggestion of chocolate. Blue Goat is quite uneventful, though certainly quaffable.

Bottle: Amber hued with a small frothy head and okay lace. The aroma has notes of caramelized toffee malts, apple, plum, grassy hops, and a earthy yeast ester. The taste is mostly a dash of malty sweetness and fruit that leaves something to be desired. Short and thin never fully developed but equally drinkable. Far from the better examples but I was able to drink it down ok, rather mundane.

Made an average appearance, poured a slightly hazy mahogany with a fizzy head that settled quickly into a fine lacing, light carbonation. Had a nose of apple and plum fruitiness, and a hint of nuts and caramel. A softly crisp and smooth, but watery and thin, medium bodied mouthfeel, average drinkability. Overall, a bit watery tasting, plum juice, and a subtle caramel toffee maltiness with a nutty toasted honey graininess, a spiciness from the hops that barely shows up, and a dry, sweet fruity finish with a little caramelized sugar lingering in the aftertaste. The 7% ABV provides a nice warmth in the palate, with some fruity esters. Well, I was disappointed with this dopplebock, I was hoping for more from New Holland, if it was better, I wouldn’t have mind paying $6.99 for a bomber bottle.

Bottle - Pours dark copper color with almost no head. Aroma is sweet and malty with some hints of yeast. Palate is medium in body and silky smooth. Upfront taste is sweet and malty. Follow through has some brown sugar sweetness, maybe some caramel and an earthy burnt malt quality. Aftertaste is more of the same with soft notes of bread and earthiness lingering. Overall, not a terrible beer, but it just doesn’t compare to some of the other Doppelbock’s that I’ve had in complexity or flavor.

Deep chestnut in body, as advertised, with a short-lived beige head. The aroma’s not bad, but very faint - dark caramel with a nutty bitterness - all very faint. A bit thin and watery, too. Not the chewy mouthfeel one expects from a doppelbock. The flavor’s okay, but light - caramel with a dab of chocolate, a hint of smoke, and some balancing earthy bitterness. Drinkable, certainly, but too light for the style.

NOT WORTH YOUR MONEY. The beer pours to a transparent coppery amber body with a thin white head. The aroma is soapy, weak dark malts, maple. The flavor is sugary malt, maple syrup. The palate is sticky and icky.

Tosa Tasting - June 24, 2006

The first tasting of the night before everyone had arrived. I kind of wished I had passed as it meant missing out on some better stuff later in the night. Still, everything is worth trying once right?

Aroma / Appearance - Honey, apple, plums and caramel were the first things to spring to mind when reflecting on the smells coming from my snifter. The thin oily head was soon engulfed by the muddy brown body.

Flavor / Palate - Bitter, dry and bland on the first sip, it did not seem to improve much throughout the rest of the glass. Hints of caramel, toffee and chocolate faded in and out, but overall there was no cohesiveness in the watery body. For a doppelbock it was suprisingly thin. If the body was fuller, the combination of flavors is close to spot on. Unfortunately, it becomes unfocused. This did not impress me at all.
