Strykzone (1007), Wood River, Illinois, USA Jul 20, 2008 Dark brown with red highlights. A nice big tan head that hung around for a while finally fading to an oily ring. Tasted like iced coffee but on the light side. Alcohol seemed higher than 6% but was more in the flavor than the warming. A good brown but not ideal on a 97 degree July evening. Still, it was enjoyable. badnewsbeers (982), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA Jul 14, 2008 reddish brown with small head..aroma of floral hops, chocolate, and nuts..flavor is largely of malts characteristics (bitter-sweet chocolate, nuts, and light hops) Sammy (3135), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Mar 29, 2008 Pours an ice cream fudge borwn with white head encasment. Malty smell. Aggressive carbonation. Very malty taste. Altogether so-so. shalloWMeans (143), Florence, Kentucky, USA Mar 26, 2008 From one of my favorite American brewers: The body is deep ruby at an angle, dark and viscuous at another, looking much deeper in color than a typical "brown" ale. The head is dwarfishly small and soft, leaving nothing more than a pale white ring as it resides. The aromas swarm around your glass with purpose; molasses, pepper, caramel, fruit cake, madeira wine, and ripe, fresh blackberries hint that this beer might be heavy and strong, but a first sip, any misconceptions are cleared up. The body is smooth, velvety and medium bodied on the palate with a great drinkable feeling. The dark fruits again present themselves in the taste, surrounded by muscular, chewy sweetness, dark rum, burnt malt, charred oak, and some obvious espresso flavors. Honestly quite straight-forward and over-the-top for the style. For a minute there I thought I was drinking a robust Mocha Porter. Overall, I’d say this beer strays pretty far from the brown ale style, but it is very aptly named. I couldn’t think of any beer I’d rather have during a cold winter bout of "cabin fever." Hudspart (327), Hudsonville, Michigan, USA Mar 24, 2008 Bottle: Pours brown with a small head. Very malty flavor with a little yeast aftertaste. Full flavor. Pretty good.
