| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 26, 2009 Bottle… Clear, dark mahogany lager with a tiny, wispy, off-white head. Smells of smoked bacon layered atop chocolate and/or caramel/crystal malts. Medium to full-bodied with lively carbonation. The flavor and finish are sweet and smoky with just a hint of cardboard, but there’s not enough oxidation to ruin the experience. Bottle courtesy of kiefdog! daknole (3027), Scottsdale, Arizona, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 25, 2009 Reddish brown pour. Aroma is very smoky with some interesting notes added by the rye. Caramel and prunes in the aroma too. Flavor has lots of smoke, rye, crisp hops and some wood notes. Interesting? Hell yes. Amazing? Not really. nearbeer (1871), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 21, 2009 Bomber, says 8.17% abv. Clear, deep ruby-chestnut with a small, fleeting head. Aroma of sticky-sweet smoke and dark fruit. Wow, big smoke and peppery rye open the taste and never let go. Some salty bacon and molasses in the long finish. Later sips reveal some cherry and chocolate underneath the smoke. Medium-heavy body is watery, smoothly carbonated and pretty drinkable. This really should be in the "Smoked" category. sebletitje (1997), Tampa, Florida, USA

pours reddish, off-white head.
aroma & flavor, lots of smoked malts, rye adds a nice dimension, full mouthfeel, grainy, spiced and roasted malts. Not the most impressive wood flavor, but definitely an outstanding doppelbock. BeerVirgin72 (814), Pataskala, Ohio, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Dec 19, 2009 Bottle shared amongst friends. I LOVE Dopplebocks, so I had high hopes. But, not a fan of the smoked ones. Flavor was wood and campfire, and meat. 5000 (2625), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 17, 2009 Bottle: Ruby caramel, thin sudsy off-white head, dies quickly, sparce lacing.   Graham cracker and rye on the nose, slight breadiness.   Has an air of dark pitted fruit, but oh so very slight.   Malty tongue, very malty, sticky, molasses, bacon on beans, some peat and campfire.   Interesting.   Campfire, ash, charred wood and peat build towards the finish.   Remains fairly malty, syrupy almost but not cloying.   This god-damned label makes me want to eat honey baked ham while drinking this som’
bitch.   My onion/cheese foccacia is a good compliment to this beer.   For some reason this beer reminds me of breakfast.   Strong assertive flavors, clean, malty, and a different beast all together.   Unusual, but I keep wanting to drink it to figure it out more.   I think this is what craft beer is about... right?

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 10, 2009 Light brown colors with a ruby to garnet hue when held to the light. Diminished off-white head. Smoked cherries and melanoidis explode in the nose. Unfortunately I catch a scent from my past that I cannot escape, the fresh manure of cattle after being given fresh feed that has been mixed with molasses. Hints of iodine as well. As long as I don’t breath too deeply I’m good. I’ve been sniffing so long I’m slightly scared to sip. After the first qauff, I can certainly say "smoke rye".lightly sweet with a bit of pine sap. Slightly medicinal, otherwise a really nice balance of malt, smoke, peat, rye and herbal hops. A brew to set by the open fire, smoke some meat, eat some smoked meat, or just sip while smelling the fires on a fall day. Quite chewt in feel. Smoke, doppelbock, rye... me like.
