alexsdad06 (1056), Ohio, USA Feb 2, 2008 Draught @ the brew pub. Pours black with a thick light tan head. The aroma is roasted malts, coffee, and chocolate. The flavor is again heavy on the roasted malt side, but mixes in some nice dark chocolate, coffee, and a hint of dark fruits. Medium/full bodied and very smooth drinking. This is one I would like to see them bottle. masonjer (560), Holt, Michigan, USA Aug 2, 2007 On tap at the brewery. Nice big stout, roasty, sweet, espresso. Cream in there with a touch of bitterness on the finish. I think the finish was lacking and wasn’t as complex as I would have hoped. But a good beer and worth a try. ToadMan (554), Washington, Washington DC, USA Jul 30, 2007 Dark with a frothy vanilla head. Lots of rich moderatly roasted malts, tones of chocolate, mildly sweet, not as overpoweringly hopped and full of espresso like most imperial stouts seem to be, but a little lacking in depth. Tmoney99 (4656), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Jul 23, 2007 Draft sample at brewpub. Poured a black color with an average creamy brown head that mostly lasted and produced good lacing. Heavy roasted malt and coffee aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture. Good complex roasted flavor with a medium roasted bittersweet finish of long duration. Good complex brew. aarossell (151), Grandville, Michigan, USA Jul 7, 2007 Very nice imperial stout style. Dark black / red color, tiny / no head. Creamy, alcohol barely comes through, though it’s QUITE present. Roasted malts, sour background, complex. shigadeyo (2210), Harrison, Ohio, USA May 30, 2007 Anniversary Trip 2007
5/19/2007: New Holland Czarist has a dark brown color with a purple/Concord grape hue to it. There is a thin brown crown on top. Chocolate, cream, and roasted grains are present in the well-integrated aroma. The flavor is just as good with a nice fruity and chocolate base with vanilla, oak, and woody complexities sprinkled throughout. The finish has a semi-sweet chocolate flavor it. This beer has a medium-full body and a creamy texture. This is one of the newest beers in New Holland’s High Gravity Series. I hope to see this one bottled as well!
Draught sample at New Holland Brewing Company’s restaurant and pub in downtown New Holland, Michigan.
badnewsbeers (1026), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA May 18, 2007 this is a solid beer from NHBC, although i would classify as a sweet stout over an impy...big black body with medium ochre head...aroma of sweet, yet roasted malts and a touch of molasses..flavor is of milk chocolate (guessing some lactose in this one) that is sweet but finishes dry and a tad bitter adding a touch of coffee and a splash of cream..nice palate dra19 (89), Zeeland, Michigan, USA May 7, 2007 A very solid imperial stout that you can only get on tap. A strong coffee taster with a hint of chocolate. A great beer from New Holland, remarkable that they don’t bottle it.
