amp811 (38), Charleston, South Carolina, USA Mar 18, 2009 Updated: Jul 15, 2009OK, upon having this a second time, and all to myself, I am seriously less impressed. The beer is amazing, but very one-note on the oakiness. About 2/3 through the beer, the oakiness starts to get to you, and you wish there were more flavors in there. Split it with a friend, or have one on draft, and youll love it. Avengedpoet (325), Mesa, Arizona, USA Mar 10, 2009 Sampled at the bockyhorsey tasting. Appears super dark brown with no head. Aroma is butterscotch/diacetyl and bourbon. Little hints of roast in the background. Taste is roasty (surprised me a bit based on the aroma) as well as airy and thin. A clean beer with some roast and alcohol that accumulate on the palate, but never really appears in the taste. A bit disappointing. ben4321 (957), Rockville, Maryland, USA Mar 9, 2009 Location: 22 oz Bottle from Norm’s
Aroma: The nose makes you think of a bourbon stout, and thats kinda what it tastes like.
Appearance: Poor is almost black, thin head.
Flavor: Lots of flavors melded together: oak, bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, and malt.
Overall Impression:
I give them high marks for the creative and meshing of flavors, but I didn’t love it the way most others seem to have. riversideAK (2648), Shoreline, Washington, USA Mar 7, 2009 Nice aroma of chocolate, wood, vanilla, a touch of coconut, bourbon, and sweet darker malts. Pours a dark brownish color with a thin bubbly head and some reddish undertones. Nice sweet dark malts, chocolate, light bourbon and oak, and nice vanilla sweetness. Lightly carbonated, and seemingly a little thin. I enjoyed the sweetness and BA characteristics of this one. nick76 (2634), Tampa, Florida, USA Mar 5, 2009 The aroma is toasted with milk, vanilla, wood, chocolate, and molasses. The appearance is dark brown with an average head. The flavor is like the aroma but is rather weak. The palate is rather thin. Overall it’s too washed out for my liking. Palidor19 (1750), Brandon, Florida, USA Mar 5, 2009 solid. has got some real good flavors of dark malts, lots of chocolate and coffee. slightly thin for the style but with a touch of vanilla and wood, this makes a great beer for the drinker. NobleSquirrel (1099), Chicago, Illinois, USA Mar 1, 2009 Bottle sort of thanks to Timmy300. Pours a deep brown, almost black. Nose is rich and syrupy with the vanilla definitely coming through. 4mths on oak will definitely do that to a beer. I got a lot of roastiness from the malts as well as a distinct bitterness. Nice full body. Tasty stuff. Mdgutows (42), Charlotte, North Carolina, USA Feb 28, 2009 Shared a 22 oz. with a friend. Dark, dark crimson brown with small tan head. Aromas consist of oak, strong bourbon, roasted caramel malts, and a drift of something similar to maple. Flavor is a complex blend of roasted malts, woody bourbon, vanilla with some sweetness and a little bit of a bitter aftertaste. Medium-heavy smooth mouth feel, kind of sweet but also dry. This is a complex and strong beer. Very impressionable and highly recommended.
