LilBeerDoctor (1480), East Setauket, New York, USA Feb 18, 2008 Extreme Beer Fest 2/15/08: Hmm, this tasted like a stout to me. I also tasted coffee, raisins, and prunes. There was a background sweetness in the taste. Enjoyable. bdigital (585), Ft Wayne, Indiana, USA Feb 17, 2008 Bottle: First off let me preface this by saying that I’ve had this brew multiple times, draft and bottle, and finally have gotten around to rating it. Even though there is no date on the bottle, I believe this is a fresh one. This is so much more balanced than I ever remember it being.
Dark brown pour with a minimal, white head. Dark roasted malts, chocolate, vanilla and subtle oak aroma...not much bourbon. Medium-full bodied mouth feel, very creamy throughout. The flavor pretty much emulates the nose, again with a very subtle oak characteristic that is much more enjoyable than it has been previously. If this is where this brew’s headed from now on, I’m going to buy up as much as I can. barleyandhoppy (9), Plainfield, Illinois, USA does not count Feb 11, 2008 22 oz bomber, dark as coffee with very little head, flovor of cappucino and very clean finish xnoxhatex (1305), Grand Rapids/Chicago, Michigan, USA Feb 10, 2008 22oz bottle from Binny’s on Clark, Chicago. Dark brown with small beige head. Aroma is chocolate, some coffee, slight vanilla, nutty, some vanilla and other barrel scents as well. Flavor is a lot of red fruit, nutty, chocolate, a good amount of bourbon, coffee, not bad. Medium to thin body and well carbonated. Okay but something about this is a little off. maniac4016 (114), bill clinton, Iceland Feb 10, 2008 from 22 oz bomber
dark as capaccino with very little head & lacing.
on nose bakers choc. /ljava
flavor is dark roasted malts, some coffee notes, clean and the bitter finish balances this beer very nicely. jredmond (1015), New Jersey, USA Feb 10, 2008 big bottle. Body is pretty black, with small brown head. Aroma is a strange sort of not bitterness, but roast. The taste is actually sweet. Some chocolate and dark fruit. wcampbell (572), Central, South Carolina, USA Feb 10, 2008 Tasted like a sweet porter. Chocolate, vanilla, and some dark fruitiness to the flavor. No bitterness. Did not taste the alcohol at all. Easy to drink and lightly carbonated. Full bodied. Not especially complex for the strength. NicerInPerson (337), North of Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Feb 8, 2008 The aroma was chocolate and an espresso roast with a fruity nature and an earthy/oaky presence. Vanilla undercurrents and raisins and other dark fruits team with alcohol for an estery and phenolic character. Caramel and a bit of sweetness also are present. The beer poured into the glass crystal clear black with a ruby highlight. The head was miniature off-white and barely there. The flavor was malty with a moderately strong presence of vanilla and bourbon coupled to oak. The flavor was nutty, toasty, biscuity and fruity. Bourbon was well done and none overpowering, but balanced the chocolate and espresso coffee presence very well. Caramel and vanilla were also along for the ride. The finish was just dry with lasting bourbon light and pleasantly into the aftertaste. The body was medium-full and with hardly any carbonation at all the beer had no creaminess on the palate. A darn nice beer, smooth and well achieved chocolate and bourbon/oak work in concert to create a very enjoyable brew. 24 ounce bottle.
