badlizard (2324), Berkeley, California, USA Jan 16, 2008 Bottle from archerliquors. Dark brown with almost no head. Roasty slightly fruity aroma and taste with some chocolate notes and a barely perceptible hint of bourbon. I was wanting a much more robust bourbon flavor, but I suspect they’ve over-used their barrels. Disappointing overall. tronraner (1905), Maryville, Tennessee, USA Jan 13, 2008 Bottle sampled at stevo’s. Pours dark ruby with big tan head. The aroma is spicy with raisin and a touch of bitter chocolate. The flavor is chocolate with some berry and some interesting spiciness. Lemon and acidity come out in the finish. Decent. KAggie97 (2406), Ugly, Hot, and Humid Spring, Texas, USA Jan 11, 2008 Bottle. Pours dirty brown with an aroma of corn and coffee. Flavor is tobacco ash and dry milk chocolate. Watery mouthfeel with a raw pasta aftertaste. I rated Crazy Stallion higher than this? Eh, whatever. Slay this one. BeerBelcher (930), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jan 10, 2008 I’ve had this beer a handful of times, and it seemed a bit different each time. I can’t believe I’ve not reviewed it until now!
It poured a dark brown with reddish hues. It had a medium bit of head composed of tiny bubbles. Aroma was a creamy smell...like a cream soda (I guess that’s vanilla) and some chocolate. Flavor was of bourbon notes which were over-powered by vanilla. There were also watery chocolate notes (think Yoohoo). Mouthfeel was both a bit watery and a bit rough feeling, and probably the weakest element of this beer.
I would recommend this beer. I’ve previously had it on tap at Roman’s Pub (St. Francis, WI), I bought a bottle from Gary’s (Oak Creek), and I had it most recently at Comet. DonPablo (11), bellevue, Kentucky, USA Jan 6, 2008 22oz. bottle; Pours dark brown, pleasant vanilla aroma, tannish head with minor lacing.Aroma of chocolate, roasted nuts, cream and a bit of licorice. Creamy and full bodied flavor, a nice combination. Small amount of malt, great roasted flavor and a small touch of alcohol at the end. A great winter beer. KingMoomie (4), Poland, Ohio, USA does not count Jan 5, 2008 On tap regularly at Vintage Estates in Boardman, OH. Very smooth and sweet with a dinomite finish. My fiance’s favorite beer. FlssmrBrewAlum (1053), Lisle, Illinois, USA Jan 3, 2008 On tap at The Galway Tribes (Frankfort, IL). Poured into a tulip glass. A deep brown pour with a decent sized tan head. The aroma was strong, but more alcohol infused than the other tones of vanilla and malts I picked up. Initial taste is strong: Chocolate and malty, with a stranger than most barrel aged beer finish. More winesque than whiskey characteristics are what I picked up, but maybe a 2nd tasting is in order. Some hints of oak, smokiness, and vanilla on the finish. A nice experience and maybe a repeat buy and rerate. JCB (1713), Durham, North Carolina, USA Dec 24, 2007 Updated: Nov 16, 200822oz from moejuck - thanks, Joe! I’d been looking forward to this one, having aged it for almost a year after receiving it (I think the bottle’s close to 2 years old). On a chilly night, I was in the mood for something malty, oaky, and warming. What I got was a thin, slightly hoppy, and sour-to-skunked beer with very little trace of malts or oak discernable. This isn’t just one of those dark beers with dark fruits you weren’t expecting; this is just a bit off. I’ve enjoyed some New Holland brews, so I’m not hopping on the hatewagon, but this is pretty disappointing.
Rerate, 3/22/08: Bomber from Sam’s, Durham. Very little trace of sourness, and a pleasant oaked quality that compares well with Weyerbacher’s Insanity. Solid brew after all.
