DougShoemaker (2855), Toronto, Canada Aug 26, 2007 Coffee, dark chocolate and alcohol greet the olfactories, dark brown, has a tiny tan head. Some wood has imparted to the flavour, perhaps even, whiskey barrel? An appreciated smokiness to the malt as well. Full bodied, bitter as can be. Great! Thanks mds. TheEpeeist (1429), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 24, 2007 22 oz bottle. Dark but clear purple brown. Tan head dies to bubbles; some lace. Strawberry preserves, prunes and fudge brownies. Brown sugar in the back. Quite the nose. Soft and syrupy with apple jack tang. Taste moves from cocoa to coconut to vanilla. As sweetness fades coffee, oak and bourbon emerge. A bit hot but very good. Would love to get another to age. Boutip (2334), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Aug 20, 2007 Bottle: Poured a deep brown with some burgundy color ale with a nice light brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of sweet malt with some bourbon notes is well balance. Taste is also comprised of a nice balance between some sweet malt with some dry fruits elements as well as some bourbon with nice vanilla notes. Body is about average with some medium carbonation and no alcohol is apparent. I like how the bourbon is present but does not dominate or brings too much alcohol. A very interesting and different beer that leaves wanting to try more from this brewer. DeweyDell (155), Columbus, Ohio, USA Aug 19, 2007 1/2 pint from the tap at a local restaurant. Nice dark color... sweet malty aroma. Great taste, nice body... a little bit of a black licorice aftertaste. This is a really nice beer. Not something that I could drink all day (being as sweet as it is) but the alcohol is masked well and it’s quite tasty. WallyWalrus (205), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Aug 19, 2007 Updated: Jan 16, 200822oz bottle. Pours a dark black with a healthy brownish head. Smell is robust with notes of caramel, roasted malt, and nuts. Taste is full-bodied and creamy with strong flavors of coffee, caramel, and alcohol -- not so much a boozy bite as brown liquor flavors. An excellent strong ale with the right balance of complexity and drinkability. Elizavyeta (110), Minnesota, USA Aug 19, 2007 Pours with a cloudy, dark head with an aroma ranging between hazelnuts, leather, and burnt sugar. The aftertaste leaves us with a slighty more powerful than desired alcohol/varnish flavor, but quickly balances out.
As complex as an ale ought to be, another fine submission from the folks at New Holland. shp555 (1678), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Aug 17, 2007 Pours a black color with a light brown head. Aroma is malty, dark fruit, and molasses. Flavor is malty, roasty, a hint of smoke, and molasses.
