BDR (2139), Roseville, Minnesota, USA Jul 25, 2007 On tap at MN Town Hall. Dark brown almost black beer with faint brown head. Roasted malt, almost burnt, with undertones of dark chocolate and coffee. Burnt malt body with an almost sweet chocolate and espresso finish with some dark dried fruit and oak in there as well. Much more complex than my last bottle. buckybeer (666), Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA Jul 17, 2007 Bomber. Poured into my 24 oz. snifter glass. Pours a very dark brown with a big light tan head that quickly fades. Aroma is malt, mild spice and roast. Flavor is burnt malts, fermented fruits, light spice and smoke. Has a light bitterness in the finish. keoki182 (305), West Bend, Wisconsin, USA Jul 16, 2007 Smooth black translucent ale with slightly tan head, which clears up pretty fast to a ring with mottled lacing on the beer surface. Very sweet malty aroma with lots of dark fruit wafts as well. Mouthfeel is quite nice, creamy but light. Flavor seeps from the mouthfeel and spreads all over your mouth. I taste a very small hint of salt in the aftertaste, which I usually notice when the beer is higher in alcohol. The flavor is dominated by roasted malt smokiness and some vanilla and caramel sweetness, both extremes marry very nicely. I can also taste a woody and dry background, probably from the oak barrels. The wood is especially noticeable when I lick my lips after drinking this. Regardless of what I correctly and incorrectly pick from my tastebuds, I can assure the reader of this beer that it is not a beer to pass on. Try it, and taste a fantastic ale from New Holland. mgumby10 (1844), Jupiter, Florida, USA Jul 15, 2007 Pours a dark brown with a small, off-tan head. Looks medium bodied. Smells of dark fruits, some roast, dark malts. The taste is slightly sweet, pretty fruity, apples, plums, blended with some roast and a little chocolate. Pretty unique combination here. Very intriguing beer. It was lightly carbonated, but seemedto work in this case. The finish was sweet and fruity, with a long aftertaste. Decent brew. Dough77 (771), Aurora, Illinois, USA Jul 11, 2007 hum ho about this one. might have been that I had pinned this as a completely different beer, but didnt let that factor my impression of the beer. Poured a dark brown very mild head. Slight boourbon on the nose, very vanilla-y as well as good portion of chocolate on nose and tongue. Mediocre and boring. stevec (19), Galena, Illinois, USA Jul 11, 2007 Tap in my bar. Pours dark with a nice thick brown head. Concentrated sweetness on the tongue followed by hints of chocolate. Finish left a light bitterness. Excellent with a steak. GeneralGao (3051), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Jul 10, 2007 22 oz bottle. Poured a dark brown color with reddish-orange highlights. Head was thick and brown with good retention. Pretty mundane cocoa aroma. Sweet, slightly acidic, and boozy; kind of like a sour chocolate liqueur, I guess. I detected bourbon, chocolate, vanilla, and oak notes. Tangy and acidic at then end. Interesting. AlchemistZ (493), Richmond, Virginia, USA Jul 10, 2007 On draft at Teller’s of Hyde Park. This was the equivalent of oak-aged chocolate milk. Nice mouthfeel, unbelievably silky, and not a notice of alcohol.
