madcow75 (425), Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, USA Jan 1, 2007 Bottle. Pours dark brown/black with no head. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, leather, some oak. Taste is tobacco, chocolate, roasted coffee and a little bit of fruit. Thinner body than I would’ve expected, a little bitterness in the finish. ChillCoat (1029), Concord, California, USA Dec 28, 2006 Updated: Feb 11, 2007Bottle. Left for me at the hotel desk as a gift (among other beers) from Goldtwins, CaptainCougar, kp et al.; this site is full of incredibly cool people!
Bright, pitch black pour with a frothy tan head. Fruit and chocolate aromas with notes of roasted malts and bourbon. Thick, chocolaty flavor with some sharp fruity notes. Tobacco, vanilla, toffee and alcohol. Clean dry finish.
McBeer (12), Minnetonka, Minnesota, USA Dec 27, 2006 A very drinkable beer and I shared it with no one. I was not expecting much from this beer and was pleasantly surprised at how smooth the alcohol blended with the coffee tones. The dark color appearance of the beer helped rounded out this well made beer. GregClow (2492), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 22, 2006 Bottle shared with a bunch of folks at DougShoemaker’s Decemberfest 2006 - courtesy of mds. Ruby brown colour with a wispy tan head. Aroma has lots of bourbon, roast malt, vanilla and wood. Mouthfeel is soft and silky. Flavour - bourbon, vanilla, freshly roasted coffee, and some interesting sour cherry notes, with slowly building bitterness in the finish. Quite nice stuff. lachesis (759), St Idesbald, Belgium Dec 21, 2006 Very dark brown beer with reddish glow on the edges. Nice bubbly yellow-beige head falling down quick. The aroma is very mild with hints of coffee (mocca), milk chocolate, babba au rhum, burnd sultanas on the crust of raisinbread, cedar wood and caramel. The taste is also very smooth, it has a mild mouthfeel that reminds me of a mix of coffee, doubble cream and sweet brown rhum. It has also a slight fruity touch of dates (dried ones) and raisins. The bitter accents are more burned ones than hoppy ones. The finale is one of caramelzed sugars, burned malts, some grapesugar and a little bit of herby hops. The alc is well hidden and this 9% beer is very drinkable indeed. Thanks joris for sharing this one. JorisPPattyn (5155), Antwerpen, Belgium Dec 20, 2006 Yellow-brown head, shortlived, over black looking beer with a lot of reddish, Cola-like highlights. Chocolate, fresh green leaves, finishing in absolute moccha/coffee; with very clearly alcohol, brandy-like, and even some higher alcohols, giving a quite complex, pleasing nose. Sweet taste with sweet chocolate flavour; rather roasted than burnt notes, a touch of fruity acidity (very restrained), and going over in rich coffee (with some coffeecream). sweet, however dominates leaving very little bitterness, and that not particulary hoppy. Retronasal some tobacco. Well bodied, smooth, grist and unfermented sugars - which is very strange seen the beer came from 19°Plato to 9A% ABV. Pleasing sweet stout (enfin... IMO), thanks to my America travelling wife. mds (2112), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 18, 2006 Bottle. Pours a dark mahogany body with a creamy yellow-brown head. Interesting aroma for the most part - vanilla, oak, and caramel. Stranger flavour that is creamy, nutty, and has permeations of woody earthiness. TheBeerOrg (1563), Kentucky, USA Dec 17, 2006 Pours black with ruby hues, fully receding tan head. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla, chocolate. Taste is milky, chocolate, oak and brown malts. Mouthfeel is medium/full bodied with lively carbonation. Tasty, but not amazing.
