nolankowal (850), Columbus, Ohio, USA Oct 18, 2006 Had some on tap at Mad Mex, and damn if it wasn’t better than I remembered! Brown pour with a tan head. Huge aroma of bourbon, vanilla, bready malt, wood, and a bit of smoke. The flavor was definetly a smooth bourbon and sweet malt maybe with a tinge of bitterness torwards the end throught the finish which also brings out more vanilla. Creamy with a soft carbonation over the tounge with a warming boozey finish. Pretty damn good stuff. merlin48 (509), New Tazewell, Tennessee, USA Oct 16, 2006 Dark chestnut body topped by a generous tan head. Rings and splotches of lace adorn the glass as the head eventually subsides. Aroma has malty caramel accented by vanilla. Hints of bourbon and smoky charcoal add complexity. Creamy and smooth, well carbonated. Hop bitterness is solid, but vague, balancing the caramel maltiness well. The oak imparts a prominent vanilla character which is nicely accented by the bourbon and smoky charcoal. The 9% abv is barely noticed. Very nice! imanerd (37), Novi, Michigan, USA Oct 11, 2006 Let me start this off by saying everyone i talked to, spoke of dragon’s milk as if it were the key to eternal life. I was not impressed. Looking back, and having sampled again, this time more for personal tasting, i found it better. Inviting chestnut color. Strong malty aroma, very sweet. Definite caramel flavors. Very little hop aroma. Flavorwise, very malty, with some late hop bitterness, but mostly very malty. Could certainly taste the oak from the aging also. Its a fine beer, i don’t know about value though, not for 8 bucks a 22 oz. Immy (1912), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA Oct 10, 2006 Draft at the Durham World Beer Festival. Mahogany with a small white head. Huge malty nose to match the huge malty flavor. Oaky notes throughout, light bourbon, some vanilla. rayg1 (432), Ft. Mill, South Carolina, USA Oct 8, 2006 This was good stuff, pretty sure this was my first oak aged beer. Pours dark brown with a creamy head. Tart little nutty flavor comming out with alcohol present. I liked the style and will try it agian. Chucks66 (84), Beachwood, Ohio, USA Oct 8, 2006 Great use of barrel aging. Poured a dark brown with a white head, chocolate aroma, smooth body flavor, great hints of sweetness, vanilla chocolate, bourbon and oak. Dark brown in color almost like a stout. This had a lot of strong flavors and the alcohol was very high. This was a very good brew. Strong Oak presence and a great dry finish.
kramer (2406), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 6, 2006 12 oz bottle, via BBB63. Pours a very dark brown with the slightest bit of light passing through the edges. The head is creamy and thick with great retention and left nice lacing. I can smell the oak and vanilla from a foot away. Some alcohol, sweet toffee and caramel maltiness, figs, dates, and marshmellow. Quite deep and complex. Flavor wise, it’s a little thin, moderately sour, and acidic on the finish. The oak is quite apparent, yet the alcohol isn’t at all. Malty sweetness is overtaken by the sour and thus leaves it pretty one dimensional. Mouthfeel is quite thin and fairly watery in texture with soft moderately active carbonation. This looked and smelled really good, but I think that there may be some type of infection taking over and killing this beer.
