TheOrange (405), Kent, Ohio, USA Oct 1, 2006 Deep dark, almost black, brown pour. very thin tan head that disappears fast. Sweet malty aroma, there some caramel in there. This is a very creamy, easy to enjoy beer. Finish is a bit on the long side, not clean, but very enjoyable. Good beer. undsioux7 (553), Cologne, Minnesota, USA Sep 22, 2006 Updated: Nov 17, 2006Pours a dark brown like coca-cola with a short lived dark tan head. Sweet caramel toffee aroma with pretty much the same taste. A bit of alchohol and roast taste in there for good measure. Mouthfeel is butter creamy.
Reminds me of 3F Rober the Bruce a bit, but without the hop bomb. A nice change of pace! Panzuriel (992), Westerville, Ohio, USA Sep 22, 2006 Dark ruddy brown liquid with a very full and lasting light tan head. Nose is a creamy and just a little sweet blend of malt and carmel goodness. Taste is a powerful and interesting blend of sweet, tart, nutty, roasty goodness and just a little bitter. Body is creamy. Finish is definitely a nice medium roast coffee. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA Sep 20, 2006 Thanks to kmweaver for this. Dark mahogony pour with a moderate head, good lacing. Aroma is darker malts like caramel and chocolate with some dark fruit notes and also vanilla. Lesser note of English hops. Flavor is the same, fairly sweet, slick mouthfeel. 9% is hidden well. I’m usually not a huge fan of this style but this was good. Dorwart (1807), Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA Sep 14, 2006 HOLY $HIT!!! I just poured this into my glass and instantly got a glass full of head. Maybe 1 inch of brew to 4 inches of head. Seems to be a little overcarbonated to me. There was a great big pssst when I popped the cap also. Well, a huge head of rather large bubbles. Milky light brown in color. Very nice aroma. Lots of malts, a little vinuous notes in the background, some vanilla, spices, milk chocolate and lactose. A slight hint of oaky sourness also. Color is a dark chocolaty brown. Complex flavor. Roasted malts, hint of smoke, oaky sourness and some more grapes. A little dry and tart on the palate. Finish is sharp and dry with some lingering sourness (light) and a nice alcohol warming. Very good stuff. I did not know what to expect with this brew. I actually thought that is was a stout before I opened the bottle. Thanks to whoever sent me this one. jewedekind (450), Middleton, Wisconsin, USA Sep 10, 2006 A round black beer that with a brown-white head. Silky and warm like a lady in lingerie. Ebony brown. Bourbon, oak, and dark chocolate. Tres nice. jasonp (1504), Sterling/Dulles, Virginia, USA Sep 10, 2006 Bottle purchased at Sam’s/Chicago. Pours dark brown with ruby edges and a quickly fading beige head. Roastiness, caramel, oak, nuttiness and light alcohol in the nose. Flavor has notes of plum, raisin, chocolate, roasted malt, caramel and brown sugar. Plesantly sweet, plenty of hop backing and bitterness. Medium bodied with a smooth texture, perhaps a tad thin along with moderate carbonation. Solid. HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Sep 10, 2006 Bottle (650ml). Poured almost opaque deep chestnut, average creamy tan head. Lovely rich deep roast chocolate/caramel malt, yeasty and woody, soft hints of vanilla. Taste is initially a little metallic, which quickly resolves to a little sharp alcohol burn, then the sweet bourbon character rides with the chocolate malt to the forefront - lovely, smooth, rich and strong, this is good stuff! Decently thick body, creamy mouthfeel, the alcohol behaves itself in the finish, - this is a great malty medium-big beer and I’ll look for it again, the only knock is there’s that hint of metal in the taste.
