CapedBrewsader (259), Brasschaat, Belgium Jul 16, 2009 1 pint 6 oz bottle at mom and dads: pours a nearly black dark brown with brilliant ruby edges. Tall dense tan head falls to a nice long lasting 1/2 cm layer. Woody nose with a nice dose of vanilla and chocolate. Good roast works it’s way through. If you let it sit some of those aromas blow over and cherry starts to build up. The beer lays nicely on the tongue with a light slickness and tannic twang. Oak tannins and alcohol work together to give it a bit of punch. Perhaps a bit too much. Some of the nice chocolate tones are lost under this tannic alcohol. Vanilla and cherry come through nicely with a creamy character after some of the booze fades away. Nice cherry and vanilla finish beernbourbon (230), chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 10, 2009 On tap at Whole Foods. Drank this one while shopping...most ridiculous grocery store ever. Pour is dark dark brown with thin tan head. Aroma is coffee, vanilla, and roasted malt. Flavor is true to nose with long sweet finish. Solid beer, but was incredible under the circumstances. BeerBaron617 (306), Novi, Michigan, USA Jul 7, 2009 Another epic brew from an amazing west michigan brewer! This poured a dark brown-black, with a small tan head. The nose is sweet, with some vanilla and coffee on the finish. The flavor is lots of vanilla, coffee, with some subtle chocolate notes. Again, epic stuff. My new favorite stout. Cheers!!
shared with merelikesbeer:) MereLikesBeer (153), Royal Oak, Michigan, USA Jul 7, 2009 I shared a bottle of this with BeerBaron617, and for a stout it’s pretty good, well RB says it’s a strong ale, but I don’t know what it is. Either way, it pours a dark brown black color with a very thin tan head. It smells like vanilla and a lot of oak. Taste, initially is heavy on vanilla, and then goes more into the oaken alcohol flavors. Seems to have a big alcohol feel to it! BeerandBlues2 (3201), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Jul 6, 2009 Bottle. Pours opaque with a small, rocky, light brown head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, nutty), light hop (grass), average yeast (leather) with notes of bourbon, oak, vanilla, prune, date, and toffee. Full bodied, alcoholic texture, average carbonation, and a spicy finish. Long duration, moderate sweetness, acidity, and bitterness. EHopper (274), Minnesota, USA Jul 3, 2009 Black, small cream head. Carmel, cognac, and malt, lots of malt aroma. Creamy, creamy, with just a great malted flavor. Some chocolate, some caramel and vanilla. It does have an odd bit of a metallic, maybe even blood flavor. I wonder if that was intentional? Overall, reminds me of eating a caramel sucker when I was a kid, and then with enough bitter and warmth to remind me I am an adult. Naka (524), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 1, 2009 On tap at 6 n Save. Pours a midnight black with a thick frothy tan head. The aroma was cocoa, dark fruit, alcohol, and sweetness. The flavor was a sweet coffee, latte with some black cherry that hid the 9% very well. The finish is where you get the toasted oak flavors and catch a little bit of the bourbon. This was very tasty. ljay6880 (132), , Pennsylvania, USA Jun 30, 2009 12 oz draft from the Brass Rail. Poured a midnight black with a medium amount of think tan head. Nose was cherries, malt, figs, alcohol, bourbon, and very, very light, perhaps chocolate sweetness. Taste was much the same with a light dry bitter for a finish. A very nice big beer, yet the body was surprisingly small. Could almost be a session beer, that is, till the ABV reared itself.
