Loads of oak and vanilla in both the nose and body. Soft carbonation. I swear there is lactose in this - it almost drinks like a milk stout. Lots of nut and caramel add balance throughout. No detection of the high ABV. alobar (1026), Harleysville, Pennsylvania, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 1, 2007 Rated 1/5/07: Well blended ale, this one is smooth and delicious. Pours dark like a stout with a creamy off white head, nice lacing and retention. Aroma is a light mix of coffee, mild chocolate, and some caramel. Rich and ever so smooth mouthfeel, this one has a soft finish that is remarkable. Flavor is exceptional nice mix here of lightly roasted malt with bitter coffee and milk chocolate. After a while I could taste a nice helping of vanilla along with some very mild hops. There is barely a hint of the high abv which helps to make this smooth and drinkable. What a nice treat indeed. pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 24, 2008 Michigan Wintr beer festival 08. Had two different vintages. One the most recent, the other a 2005! The 2005 is a very different beer, so that goes in parenthesis where the two beers differ. Dark brown with little head. Subtle sweetness. Fruity oaky smells. (The nose is a bit sharper and fruitier on the 2005). Small bubbles and a subtle body to it. The nose predicts the flavor well. A bit of oaky sweetness. Dark malt. Vanilla sort of bourbon is less dominant than I remember previously (Some odd Jolly Pumpkin like bite inhabits the 2005, yummy!). This works. A big clean beer. The score is this higher for the 2005 version.. the other deserves a bit of a bump down, .2 points maybe. jefcon (1003), Arlington, Virginia, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | May 17, 2008 Very dark pour with reddish edges. Aromas are deep, nearly sour, with a sweet vanilla / chocolate malt smell layered on top. The palate of the beer is pretty aggressive, with some alcohol showing through. Raisins, chicory, and vanilla don’t completely mesh on the tongue. This was a miss for me, though the flavors were strong and true. Panzuriel (993), Westerville, Ohio, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 22, 2006 Dark ruddy brown liquid with a very full and lasting light tan head. Nose is a creamy and just a little sweet blend of malt and carmel goodness. Taste is a powerful and interesting blend of sweet, tart, nutty, roasty goodness and just a little bitter. Body is creamy. Finish is definitely a nice medium roast coffee. pinkzambia (989), Boise, Idaho, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jul 1, 2005 Bottle: "Yikes" is your first reaction to this tangy & sour brew. It punches you in the mouth at first, but then after a while, grows on you like a slightly annoying friend. It has aromas of vanilla and wood splinters. This is worth the experience. In my small and limited career, I have had nothing like it. Enjoyable. Thanks to Indiana_Red for splitting this 12 oz. bottle three ways with Bück Dich and me!
