Commercial Description:
Dragon’s Milk is a 17th century term used to describe the strong beer usually reserved for royalty. This strong ale was aged in oak for over 120 days. The aging process extracts flavors from the wood, which contribute to its complex character. Hints of bourbon flavor perfectly compliment its roasted malts to produce a beer fit for a King.

Thanks to Sprinkle for sending this enjoyable brew! This dark garnet colored brew forms an average sized light tan head. This really opens up nicely as it warms, molasses, coffee, and a sweet smokiness all join in to form the complex aroma. Molasses in the flavor along with dried fruits and the characteristics of the barrel aging. Good big beer which hides it’s alcohol well.

Thick black pour with a medium tan head. the aroma is very nice and inviting. Smells thick, sweet, and creamy. Quite a different character. Very full feel as it coats the mouth with a milky smooth sensation. Vanilla icing and a sweet milky flavor. Some oak character rounds out a nice beer. 2004 aged bottle sampled in Nov 2005 It’s a different beer after a year. Tangy and sour. A slightly discernable roasted malt is noticable underneath a fruity (cherry) sourness. Has some odd sour character that I did not expect. not sure if its from alcohol, or the aging in the oak. It’s not unplesant, just not expected. Not changing my rating, it will stick from the original sample as I think that is the best representation of what the brewer wanted the beer to be.

In the bomber bottle at the Max & Joe’s Tavern Michigan Beer tasting (11/21/6). A very dark, dark brown. No head at all. Has the aroma of horhound candy, vanilla and coffee. Dum Dum candy flavors. Tastes very stout-like. Rich caramel and chocolate. Thick and delicious. The finish is roasted coffee. Has a mild hint of bourbon. The alcohol is well hidden in this beer by the strong sweetness. Yum.

[GABF, Denver Co - 2006] Dark brown in color almost like a stout. This had a lot of strong flavors and the alcohol was very high. This was a very good brew. Strong Oak presence and a great dry finish.

Wow. Probably the best New Holland I’ve had besides the Czar Imperial stout. Smells and looks like a stout, but again I see I was wrong, and that it is considered an english strong. Either way a very mighty brew. Rich taste of burnt oak, coffee, chocolate and a nice hint of hops both in the body and finish.

Pours black, with a fine, white head. Aroma is coffee and chocolate. Mouthfeel is thickish with flavors of chocolate, coffee, nuts, and bourbon.

Pours deep obsidian (some ruby through light) with aroma of big barrel aged malt, oak, vanilla, bourbon, and chocolate. Nice manly aroma, like my ass after working in the yard all day (well, much better than that). Tastes very malty, with a firm barrel/oak aged element, plus vanilla, chocolate, dark fruit. Smooth finish, with some tartness. Not as full-bodied as other beers of this genre I’ve had, but complex and balanced. Did this one preceed Heresy? I think it may have.
