Jul 28, 2003 Updated: Jan 17, 2009Regular version, bottle. Dark brown with a slight muddiness. The aroma is fudgey with a little bit of fruit. Very fudgey palate, some heat, some currant fruitiness. Nothing terribly spectacular but it’s a nice brew, well made and enjoyable to drink.
I had the non-barrel-aged version spiked with blackberries that was served at the Michigan Brewer’s Festival. Almost black, murky. Aroma is blackberry vs. coffee vs. chocolate malt. The flavours are a little better-integrated on the palate – vanilla, cream, blackberry, mocha. Okay experiment but nothing to lose sleep over if you never see it again. 7-4-7-4-14 = 3.6

Mar 16, 2003 Aroma is very chocolatey, full of bourbon flavors. Soft, creamy malt. Sweet chocolate, hints of bourbon in the finish. Seems very carbonated, slightly sour. Bizarre finish of sourness, bourbon and chocolate. Innovative but not very well balanced.

Dec 30, 2005 Very dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of wood, chocolate and vanilla. Flavor of vanilla and bourbon. A little too syrupy sweet.

Mar 2, 2005 Cool label (as usual) and a decent brew. Nice color and flavor, but it’s lacking something...I’m just not sure what. The best oak barrel aged beer that I’ve had is Weyerbacher Heresy - if you haven’t tried it yet, do so immediately!

Jun 5, 2003 Rich and deep, oaky, nose with ripe fruits and a smooth, mellow, charcoal whiskey tone. Big time malt presence, alcohol, of course, as well as some hints of chocolate. really dark body, just a hint of burnt dark brown around the edges. Almost no head. WOah, tasted citrucy and sour, not what I expected. Acidic and alcoholic, very clean and a bit dry. Pretty complex malt character, some ripe berries hiding in there too, perhaps. Chocolatey and roasted on the finish, just a bit watery and thin. A bit of a port wine character to this solid brew.

Jul 1, 2005 Dark brown/auburn color, off-white head, light lacing. Nose of rice vinegar, chocolate roast, cold used coffee grounds, lactose, some soy sauce. The flavor is tart with the oak tannins, some tobacco and fruit gluten flavors. Finishes tangy, salty, sweet, roasted. Very unique in an old peculiar way. Thanks Ken!

Jan 30, 2005 Deep red color, pours with very little head. Sweet roasted malts with a hint of the oak that this is aged in. Hint of hops. Alcohol is well hidden. Medium bodied, pretty smooth. Lingering bourbon malts. Nothing too exciting but seems to be a pretty good beer.

Feb 18, 2005 Bottle - a beautiful, almost grape juice appearance. Deep and dark with a purple/ruby tint through the light. A smallish white head. Malty, vanilla aroma. Sweetish, vanilla again. I don’t get all the oak/bourbon, but I really like this one - very rich. Creamy mouthfeel. A keeper!
