Heathen (492), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Aug 17, 2008 THOUGHTS: Kölsch beers aren’t a favorite of mine. I can tell this is well made. It’s just not really my glass of beer. But it did go down easy. The flavor was the best part of this beer and isn’t that what really matters.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured an ever so slightly hazy, light yellow with a small to average, sudsy, white head that mostly diminished and left virtually no head. The aroma was light to moderate bread, hay and toast, light to moderate flowery and grassy hops and very light dough yeast. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and acidic; lightly bitter and slightly sour; while the finish was lightly sweet and acidic, and slightly sour with a short duration. There was sugary malt, toast, some grassy and flowery hops, earthiness and some lemony citrus. The light body was a little astringent with soft carbonation and a light metallic and slightly dry finish. tronraner (1391), (Louis-, Sevier-, Knox-)ville, Tennessee, USA Aug 11, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours brilliant golden yellow with a few small floaties and a small, but tight, white head. The aroma is light and bready, with a little bit of honey and a noticeable Saaz quality. The flavor is crisp and hoppy at first, with an earthy and grassy bitterness. A honeyish sweetness comes in after to balance it out. The finish is nice and dry, and leaves an earthy, slightly toasty, aftertaste. Simple, crisp, and tasty. kmweaver (1948), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Aug 9, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours a slightly hazy, medium-golden color; white head with decent formation and patchy lacing. Sugar, light citrus, and bread in the aroma; reasonably dry, if somewhat muted. Medium mouthfeel: crisp and dry throughout, with plenty of toasty malts, crackers, light citrus notes, and a touch of mineral bitterness; a very drinkable, dry, toasty kolsch; the malt character at the core is dominated by basic sugar notes, but it’s still pretty tasty and crisp overall. Medium finish: toasty malts / crackers and a light, lingering mineral bitterness; ends dry and toasty. alexanderj (1218), San Diego, California, USA Aug 6, 2008 Bottle; pours a ruddy, slightly hazy, yellow color with a white head. Aroma of biscuit, grass, earth and sweetness. Great summertime beer. A good amount of earthy/grass hops in the finish, but not overly bitter. Backbone of sweet biscuit malt. Nothing ground breaking, but a good representation of the style. BeerVirgin72 (568), C-Bus, Ohio, USA Aug 6, 2008 Bottle shared by dragonstout at the Winking Lizard. Poured a hazy yellow. Nice aroma of wet grass. Flavor was kind of sweet up front, like sweet corn...But the finish was weird. A wet sock kind of funk that I did not care for.
