BeerBelcher (722), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Apr 23, 2008 It seems like imperial stouts were made for rating; they have distinctive appearances and tons of flavor and aroma. And while this one was good, and I enjoyed it, and no doubt by the time I’m writing will have given it a good rating, I can’t say that it is in the elite of this style in my mind, compared to other beers of this style I’ve tried...still good and worth a try though.
It poured a very inky black, and was a bit more viscous than I thought it might be. Head was minimal. Aroma was coffee-ish, and very boozy but in a bad way. It was (to me) quite reminiscent of rubbing alcohol. Thankfully, that rubbing alcohol astringency did not transfer to the taste, which was highly roasty with lots of coffee flavor. Still a bit boozy (it’s 10+% ABV after all), but not in a bad way. Mouthfeel was rather smooth.
I bought this bottle from Sendik’s in Franklin, and split it with SurlySober and Flyer, who in turn shared Weyerbacher Simcoe DIPA, Ten FIDY, and Central Waters Coffee Stout with me.
sneagrams3 (1402), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Aug 31, 2008 The Dan Journal #236. Tasted 8/26/08. 22oz bomber. Pitch black hue with a beige ring of head. Aromas of toffee and dark chocolate. Good nose! Hoppy aromas. Full bodied with a super sticky body. Citrus toffee and syrup. Big imperial stout. I had this with some homemade peanutbutter cookies and it was heaven! So good! Narnad (78), Wonder Lake, Illinois, USA Aug 30, 2008 Poured from a 22 oz bottle very very black with a small brown/tan head that quickly fades. Aroma is heavily roasted malt with a light coffee tone to go along with the heavier brownie-like aroma. Flavor starts of kinda sugary right at the tip of your tongue, moving into a bitterness like dark chocolate in the middle and finishing with a fine roasted flavor with a slight smokiness to it. Alcohol is very prevalent throught the drinking experience. This beer is very thick and feels oily in your mouth. I highly recommend this awesome beer! Butters (315), Richmond, Virginia, USA Aug 27, 2008 Poured black. Very chocolate, roasty, malty. Some coffee comes out in aroma. But boozy as hell towards the end. Lots of alcohol warming. Medium velvety mouthfeel. Pretty good, but hot. KieferUGA (322), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Aug 24, 2008 22 oz. bottle. Dark black pour with a thin, light tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, dark fruits. Creamy mouthfeel, very smooth. Flavor is initially sweet. As it sits in your mouth, the roasted chocolate notes really comes through. Some hints of licorice as well. A touch of warming alcohol accompanies a long, bitter finish. ewestern (87), Ohio, USA Aug 18, 2008 Pour was very nice black with hints of dark ruby if the light hit it right. Creamy tan head that continued to build after the pouring was finished. Good lacing as the drink went down. Aroma was roasted malts, chocolate and alcohol, seemed a bit weak though. Flavor was the same with chocolate and mocha dominating the roasted malts, the alcohol was hard to find until the finish. Thick and smooth with a burnt bitter coffee finish with notes of alcohol on it. The thickness hangs around but the bitterness leaves.
