The aroma is wheat, Belgian Ale, yeasty, and slightly woody. The flavor is all caramel, vanilla, some hints of banana clove soaked in booze, and some hops to choke off the cloy. The palate is nice, rich, smooth, and refreshing for a Barley Wine. This is great. alobar (1032), Harleysville, Pennsylvania, USA

CaptainCougar peer pressured him into giving me a bottle on my visit to Atlanta. Thanks! I owe you one. Very nice. very nice indeed. Sweet and buttery as if oak aged, but not quite. Lots of caramelization, but not like the melanoidin malts I taste in many IIPAs. This is much better. A small amount of oxidation, which I think adds to the character. Dark amber color. Delicious. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 29, 2008 Bottle. Pours a reddish amber color and is mostly clear and has a nice short lived beige head. Smell is a bit buttery, oaky, very strongly wheaty and some vanilla too. Taste is smooth, buttery wheat and vanilla and oak in the flavor as well. Light to medium body that goes down very smoothly with the soft carbonation. Somewhat creamy. Nice beer. Smell was sweet sugars and malts. Flavor was caramel, vanilla, and sugar. Very sweet, just the way I like my barley wines. Loved it. 502Flavors (629), Louisville, Kentucky, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 17, 2008 bomber into wineglass - my buddy graciously hooked me up with this for my birthday. Great amber with some reddish orange notes to it and a descent barely off-white head that holds decently well, but takes a very hard pour to stir up. Aroma is not too appealing to me - a lot like an english barley wine, sweet malt bomb - but with some nice doughy character and a hint of hops to redeem it a bit. Flavor is much better and not as overly sweet as I expected - a bit sweet and blank upfront, but fades into a nice wheaty fruityness. It really transforms slowly and includes hints of sweet dark fruits fading into more acidic citrus fruits with a nice creamy vanilla quality to the finish. Though it undoubtedly warms the stomach, the alcohol is hidden well in the flavor. Medium to full body with soft carbonation and smooth mouth feel. Overall: very nice, but I really wanted and expected more wheat. A bomber might be a bit too much for one person though. frankenkitty (1903), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 28, 2008 Beautifully hued a deep bronze-tinted mahogany beneath a long lasting head of fluffy ecru. Lush, layered aroma of intense caramel, cherry, brandy, sweetened cereal, mild earthiness. Smooth and thick on the palate, letting the aftertaste carry long afterwards. Flavor starts sweet, with honey and caramel, slightly stale, with oxidized notes that make this seem closer to an Old Ale than a Barley Wine. Alcohol follows late, fairly strong and slightly obtrusive. A rich, potent brew that does well after aging and becomes an introspective slow-sipper.
