Commercial Description:
A Wheatwine Style Ale.

In early 14th Century England, Sir William of Wykeham began a tradition to assist wayfarers on holy pilgrimages. Travelers would go to the Hospital of St. Cross in Winchester for a free ration, or "dole", of bread and ale. This became known as the "Pilgrim's Dole".

A deep amber color with great lacing and a frothy off-white head and good retention. A really sweet malty nose of dark fruit; figs and plum. Tast is a syrupy molassas with brown sugar, raisins, dates, and maybe some prune. A nice mild bitter finish. Some notes of alcohol as well. Very nice mouthfeel.

Pours a dark amber with a minimal but persistent off-white head that laces. Aroma is sweet bread dough and some spiciness. Taste is buttery and smooth. Well balanced butterscotch, caramel, burnt sugar, and mild hop bitterness flavor. Some warmth of alcohol after the finish, but really un-noticeable in the taste. Damn good! BTW, this tastes almost identical to Schlafy’s Barleywine, except that it’s $5.99 per bomber vs. $8.49 per bomber.

Bottle at the second Doubletree tasting, provided by Zinister. Thanks! Pours a consistent tree sap amber with an aroma of wet leaves, dewy grass, and sour molasses. Flavor is carnival sugar and candied apple. Full mouthfeel. Iiked this one; great brew.

Appearance: Pours a clear, dark copper body with a small, bubbly, off-white head. How lovely looking! Smell: Sweet-smelling aroma of malted wheat and toffee syrup with a light booziness and faint fruity notes. Taste: Deep, resounding toffee-flavored sweetness and tangy malted wheat flavor. A dash of Navan vanilla cognac. Light hint of fruit. A slight touch of alcoholic heat on the sweet, luscious finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation. Velvety mouthfeel. Warming alcohol presence. Drinkability: Though it can be a bit hefty on the palate at times, New Holland has crafted an excellent wheatwine.

Clear, orange with pink hues and a small, thin white ring of a head around the rim of the glass. Sweet, syrupy thick aroma with definite notes of apricot and an ever-so-slight alcohol burn. Toffee/caramel maltiness lends a smooth undertone. Moderately sweet, moderately bitter flavor at first, turning cloyingly sweet and metallic towards the finish. Aftertaste is grainy, notes of popcorn and medicinal cleansiness. Sweetness in the finish is rather offputting - definitely not a pleasant sweet flavor.

Pours dark copper with a ruby tinge. Perfectly clear at cellar temperature, and a thin cap of white foam barely covered the surface. Aromatics have plenty of caramel, toffee, and alcohol. Pretty straightforward in the nose with some subtle fruit, and a mild spicyness. The mouthfeel is on the sticky side of medium, lightly crisp and tacky. The pallet is fairly malty for a wheatwine, with caramel bits and lingering crystle malt. Alcohol has quite a presense as well as the bittering hops. Firmly bitter with earthy undertones. A bit peppery and hot. The 10% ABV is not being shy. Finishes with plenty of warming fusels, cracked toffee, and heat on the back of the tongue.

Had this one on tap at mad mex. Poured a light brown amber color. Aroma was of a lot of whiskey first of all which i was suprised by. Had a little maltiness to back it up but this seemed like it had to have been aged in some kind of barrel. Maybe i was given the wrong beer or something but this really seemed like drinking some jack daniels.

Poured at the 1/28 Houston tasting. Pours a clear red ale with a frothy white head. Aroma of sweet hops with sweet malts. Taste is pretty high alcohol with a medicinal, clove flavor that is very one-dimensional.
