Commercial Description:
A Wheatwine Style Ale.

In early 14th Century England, Sir William of Wykeham began a tradition to assist wayfarers on holy pilgrimages. Travelers would go to the Hospital of St. Cross in Winchester for a free ration, or "dole", of bread and ale. This became known as the "Pilgrim's Dole".

+++RE RATE 12-Jul-08+++
22 oz bottle shared by csbosox. Pour is golden orange brown with a very thin off white head. Aroma strong full booziness, strong orange citrus. Caramel maltiness. Some smoky grassiness underneath. Taste is full, dripping with nectar sweetness, burnt caramel and a pretty big shot of booze at the end. Palate is full, wheat is evident in the aftertaste. This had improved a bit from last rating (7,3,7,4,14 - 3.5) Thanks for sharing this Chris.

22 oz bottle shared by Zinister, 10th bottle sampled at the 1/28 Houston Tasting. Pour is orange-ruby-brown with an off white head. Aroma of sweet caramel, hoppiness with some grainy wheatiness. Taste is very medicinal, sharp cloves and sweet chemical. Pretty hot and really not refined at all. (7,4,6,3,13 - 3.3)

swet malty body. Pale gold color with creamy white head. Sweet malt aroma with that candy edge I associate with barleywines

Tap at Town Hall.sweet and oddly salty aroma. Lots of caramel and salty peanut.some leaf and grass as well. Slightly off balance chocolate flavor. Doesn’t suit the style that well.some zesty hops and toffee. Slightly thin for a barleywine. Decent bitter finish.

Poured a fairly bubbly light amber color. Not really much head came about. Smelled strong with a good bit of alcohol and some caramel and leather. Tasted much the same: strong caramel and alcohol flavors. Some other residual sweetness as well, like brown sugar or some type of hard candy. Overall, it was quite dry with no real hop presence. Gave off a sticky texture. Overall, quite good and fairly strong.

Pours clear, red-brown, with a fine, light head. Aroma is caramel and toffee. Mouth feel is rather thick. Flavor is sweet with a caramel, toffee, hint of chocolate, and alcohol bend.

Bottle, 10%. Good fruity aroma, dried fruit, apricot. Cloudy dark orange colour. Small, soft, creamy head. The flavour is nicely fruity, creamy, quite bitter and with some alcohol. The mouthfeel is almost slimy, but OK.

This bottle is aged at least 2 years... Appears an amber toned orange with a small, beige head that slowly fades into a mild cap. Spotty lacing is left around the glass. Smell is of vanilla, caramel, cocoa, roasted nuts, & mild spices. Taste is of the mentioned aromas with caramel, vanilla, and chewy malts digging in for some sugary flavors. Mouthfeel is sugary, syrupy, with just a touch of the 10% coming through. Seems to age well.
