Commercial Description:
A Wheatwine Style Ale.

In early 14th Century England, Sir William of Wykeham began a tradition to assist wayfarers on holy pilgrimages. Travelers would go to the Hospital of St. Cross in Winchester for a free ration, or "dole", of bread and ale. This became known as the "Pilgrim's Dole".

This beer was a huge dissappintment. I has a burnt orange unfiltered color. More hopy then I expected. One of my least favorite barley wines.

12 oz 2005 bottle opened in Sept 07. Pours a translucent orange amber with a medium creamy lacing off white head. Aroma of caramel, dark fruits, vanilla, bready, tobacco, toast, toffee and light alcohol. Flavors of dark fruits, vanilla, toffee, honey, some woodiness and some tart notes possibly from the wheat. This rating is on a 2+ year old bottle and the beer is very smooth on the palate. I thought this was a very nice BW.

Too sweet. No hops. Flavor is carmel and alcohol. Lots of body. Pretty, clear amber color.

12 fl oz bottle. Pours hazy orange with little off-white head. Spiced aroma, slight wheaty-like and a dry raisin note. Thick mouthfeel. Slight liqourice flavour, raisin note and thick malty. Dry finish. Warming alcohol finish. Nice.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of boboski. Slightly hazy amber golden with an off-white head. Fat aroma of caramel and overripe fruit. Full-bodied, sweetish caramel and again overripe fruit. Some bitterness in the finish. Classical American Barley Wine without being stunningly interesting. 180807

First taste is very sweet, hints of grain caramel and bread. It tasted sort of fruity, cherry and white wine notes. There is a soft oak aroma and taste. The alcohol is quite noticable, and had a alcohol aroma and slight burn. There is a sour taste that lingers in the back of the mouth. The body is very full and very creamy. There is no lacing and a very small head.

22 oz bomber. Pours a clear amber color with a small white head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, tobacco, butterscotch and alcohol. Taste is a warm butterscotchy flavor with hints of tobacco, smoked malts, alcohol and caramel. Excellent.
