Commercial Description:
A Wheatwine Style Ale.

In early 14th Century England, Sir William of Wykeham began a tradition to assist wayfarers on holy pilgrimages. Travelers would go to the Hospital of St. Cross in Winchester for a free ration, or "dole", of bread and ale. This became known as the "Pilgrim's Dole".

I’m surprised I haven’t rated this yet. This was aged for about a year in my cellar. Pours a deep clear golden color with a medium rocky off white head. Aroma has scents of yeast, grapes, and wheat. Flavor shows a strong wheat flavor along with a sour white grape taste. This is one of the first barleywines that I have aged and tasted a difference in. I remember the original being sweet and heavy, this is more sour and easy to drink, although still sticky on the tongue. A liittle strange but intriguing for me.

Sweet aroma of caramel and port. Pors out a nice dark amber color with very little head. Sweet and bitter flavor with notes of vanilla. Pretty good mouth feel.

12z bottle. Hazy, dirty golden hue. Little head. Aromatic notes of citrus, apples, raisins, port, and a sweet breadiness. Good, tart and sour mouthfeel. Flavors of sap and resin, oranges, lemons, somewhat lively. Smooth, but not quite enough.

Not the Barley Wine I would have expected. Lots of fruit in the nose and the taste, however, the sourness comes on too strong. Beautiful reddish copper color with a very thin off white head. Not much of an alcohol feel even though it’s 10%. This one just didn’t give me that warm, fuzzy feeling I look for in a Barley Wine.

bottle-i was very dissapointed with this beer. this beer poured dull oragne with very little carbonation. aroma os overly sweet with alot of green apples, grapes, white wine, faint earthy hops and huge alcohol heat. this beer definately has those wheat wine characters, but not pleasant. the body sufferes from lack of carbonation and way too surupy. this beer has alot of complexity, but not in a good way.

I believe Eyedrinkale sent me this, but it could be one of many others. Either way thanks to whoever supplied me with this. <P> Sweet fruits, malt and alcohol in the aroma. Honey orange in color with no real head. Very sweet with some raisin and apple sweetness and less thick of a feel than I expected. Drier too and less malty. Has an orange-like flavor in there. Different, but still recognizably a Barleywine. High acidity.

Beautiful copper, next to no head. Heaps of caramel, very hoppy. Reminds me of my trip to San Diego. Cherries & grap soda. Maple/caramel malt. A bunch of alcohol - almost to the point of astringency. Very bitter mapley finish. As I was drinking this one we started getting the first snowfall of the season.

On tap at Pizza Plant Transit location, Williamsville NY. Pours a reddish amber color, very light haze, beige head, faded after a while. Full aroma of figs, dates, and caramel, nice and sweet. Flavor starts out sweeter some molasses and fig while it fades in to a lightly bitter finish. Body is big but the beer is a bit too boozy and it’s pretty sticky. Good flavors and it melds together pretty well.
