Commercial Description:
A Wheatwine Style Ale.

In early 14th Century England, Sir William of Wykeham began a tradition to assist wayfarers on holy pilgrimages. Travelers would go to the Hospital of St. Cross in Winchester for a free ration, or "dole", of bread and ale. This became known as the "Pilgrim's Dole".

Butter’s 4th cellar reduction. Pours brownish red with a thick tan head that laces. Strong alcohol on the nose with a fruit honey smell also. Thick caramel with alcohol prominent and a toffee finish.

From a 22 oz silk-screen printed bottle. Pours a clear copper (at least after it warms up a little). There’s not much of a head and what does form is slow to rise due to the high viscosity of the beer. There’s some banana, caramel and nuts along with a little bit of dried fruits. There’s a slightly harsh bitterness in the flavor that doesn’t sit with the rest of the flavors quite as well, although it does hide its alcohol well.

Bottle at the Fourth Butters’ Cellar Clearance Event. Clear reddish amber pour with wispy off white head. Nose of alcohol and malty ’scotch ale’ quality. Flavor is heavily carmelized, more scotchness, abv is fairly well hidden. Nice warming effect. Medium syrupy body. Very decent, but I think I preferred the terrapin wheat wine better.

Light reddish copper brown in color. Quick dissipating white head. Caramelized nose and flavor. Alcohol pervades the palate but not in a bad way. Sticks to the ribs. Chewy and fun.

22 oz bottle at Butters’ 4th Cellar Reduction. Pours a clear amber body with a lacing beige head. Smells of brown sugar, alcohol, and vegetal. Taste some chocolate, caramel, and a little medicinal. Sticky and full palate.

Draft at Gravity Head: Creamy caramel colored pour with a thin, whispy white head that fades. Strong crystal malt laden nose. Very light hops come through after time. The body is chewy, sometimes cloying, with lots and lots and lots of wheat and crystal. Some caramel up front, more caramel in the middle and a touch of caramel on the back. This is a real one-dimensional beer. I happen to like that one dimension, but some balance would have helped.

Bomber from Brian as I recall. Clear orange amber body, off white head shows good durability, but only spotty lace. Dark fruits, some woodiness, maybe even a hint of oak, and noticeable alcohol. Mediu/full body. smooth but sticky with a warming effect on the palate. Quite sweet flavors of brown sugar, molasses, and caramel last into the long, sugary finish. Not bad in the right setting and mood, as it is really sweet.

Amber. Vibrant colour with a slight chill haze. Sweet, caramel and canned mushroom aroma. Some earthiness and a little bit boozy. Very sweet. Total caramel. Very syrupy. Not my thing at all.
