Commercial Description:
A Wheatwine Style Ale.

In early 14th Century England, Sir William of Wykeham began a tradition to assist wayfarers on holy pilgrimages. Travelers would go to the Hospital of St. Cross in Winchester for a free ration, or "dole", of bread and ale. This became known as the "Pilgrim's Dole".

bottle - Pours amber-orange with a thin off white head. It smells of sweet caramel malt with a little dark fruit and alcohol. The flavor is sweet malt and an oak note that I associate with barley wines. Despite being a wheat wine, it struck me as very similar with maybe a bit lighter flavor than many barley wines. There’s some alcohol presence as well. It finishes with mild bitterness.

Dark and amber colored with little to no head. Slight floral, pine cone aroma. Palate is sticky and bitter. Chocolate malts seem out of place here. Plenty of sticky caramel and a sweet finish. While not cloying, lots of flavor for a wheat-based beer.

Pours a clear copperish color with a thin light tan head. Sweet, caramel aroma with some brown sugar. Hint of oak. Sweet taste. Brown sugar, caramel, berries. The alcohol is masked a bit. Some raisins’ mixed in as well. Decent barley wine.

Bottle from Oakes and Beershine. I thought this was a wheat wine? Caramel/apricot color with a fair sized head. Aroma is very sweet with caramel, honey, and bread. Flavor is pretty sweet with a bit of alcohol on the tongue. Flavors of caramel, yeast, honey and some woodsy notes. Nice brew.

22 ounce bottle from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a clear strawberry color with a medium head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma is nuts, plum and berries. Taste is caramel, nuts, berries and anise. Slightly cheesy. Full bodied.

Pours an orange color with a tiny white head. Smells sort of toasty with lots of caramel. Very sweet and very boozy. Some butterscotch and honey under all that alcohol. Some banana as it warms. I suggest splitting this 22oz bottle as it is rather tough to finish.

This is not a Barley wine, it is a WHEAT wine. Very interesting! Poured a caramel color with a dark lacy head. The aroma was very sweet. The taste of sweet malt was abundant. Once it warmed some the mouthfeel was full, soft and velvety. Along with the malt you notice an oaked characteristic that makes a very nice addition! Bottle from Brusin’ Ales shared with Steve, Brian, Toma and the always opnionated Drbayern.
