Commercial Description:
A Wheatwine Style Ale.

In early 14th Century England, Sir William of Wykeham began a tradition to assist wayfarers on holy pilgrimages. Travelers would go to the Hospital of St. Cross in Winchester for a free ration, or "dole", of bread and ale. This became known as the "Pilgrim's Dole".

Another New Holland let down. Hit and miss with this brewery. Sweet, but very thin for a barley wine. Lacks strong aroma.

22oz Bottle.A clear amber/orange color pour with a medium off white head, some spotty lacing. Maltyt aroma, sweet bread dough, vanilla, rasins, apples, and pepper.Flavor of brown sugar, cask wood, butter, peaches, honey and alcohol.Full body, thick creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation, sharp alcohol finish. I think the whaet exposes the flavor and aroma of the alcohol, but in a good way. Drinkable and good, but slightly overpriced for me and what it is.

22oz bottle (Binny’s Naperville)-Pours a nice ruby red with a nice small tight beige head. Aroma of sweetness, caramel, yeast, fruits, and raisinns. Taste of the same with the alcohol being very prominent in the taste along with a little bit of oak. This full bodied brew is not bad but a bit too hot turns me off a bit.

Pours a murky brown with a beige head. Aroma is of wheat, caramel, vanilla, bananas, and malt. Taste was very earthy, with wheat, hops, some lemon zest, sugar, and bananas, all with a caramel malt backbone. Strong alcohol presence makes this one bitter to the taste. Not something Id drink again, but worth a try.

Bottle. Clear, brownish amber pour with no head. Sweet, sugary aroma of vanilla, raisin and hops. Similar flavor with a somewhat hot finish.

Pours a deep bronze color. Thick head which dissipates quickly. Very wheaty aroma. Like a Belgian ale. Flavor is interesting. Vanilla on caramel. Little bitterness, almost unnoticeable. Smooth and lingering palate. This is better than I expected.

20080329 Blind tasting notes and score from Cornboy 2nd annual Barleywine Extravaganza. Thin bodied, earthy, sharp, like a super hot ESB with butterscotch and some green beans. Gross. In retrospect, it is a shame this one had the dubious distinction of being served after BAON and FFF Behemoth. Too bad. Based on recent ratings, maybe they changed the recipe for the latest batches.
