Commercial Description:
A Wheatwine Style Ale.

In early 14th Century England, Sir William of Wykeham began a tradition to assist wayfarers on holy pilgrimages. Travelers would go to the Hospital of St. Cross in Winchester for a free ration, or "dole", of bread and ale. This became known as the "Pilgrim's Dole".

The rust colored body was clear after pouring, and the head that formed was pretty small in size. The smell was that of figs and raisins, and did not exhibit typical wheat wine aromas like banana or clove. The taste was sweet as anticipated with brown sugar and vanilla being the most prominent flavors. Not very wheaty in this category either, with a smooth but simple taste. Not very hoppy, and hid the ABV quite well. Soft and delicate on the palette, with little aftertaste. Enjoyable, but too simplistic and rather nondescript.

22oz. bottle served in a snifter. Poured a light amber with a sparse head. Big malt aroma with some caramel, a bit of hops and a little alcohol. Big malty body, warming, but not hot with alcohol. Toffee and caramel in the flavor. Decent amount of hop bitterness to balance the malt. Maybe a little lighter bodied than a typical big barleywine. I didn’t get a lot of wheat characteristics. Nice beer.

On tap at the Bavarian Lodge, Lisle,IL. and dispensed to a tulip glass with a deep copper/amber hue and off white, silky looking foam to the head, and a modest, curtainy rim of lacing. The aroma was immediate alcohol, light grain, mid-toned fruit notes, and malt sweetness. Alcohol also initiated the flavor, with less sweetness than the nose, a bitter and dry nature, a hint of caramel, and smooth malt to temper. A warming sipper!

Pours clear bright copper with a thin white head. Sweet nose--oranges and wheat. Creamy medium body. Biscuity citrus taste.

Bottle at Monk’s Café, Wallingatan
Amber color with red hue; medium head. Aroma of sweet caramel, vanilla, Bourbon, alcohol. Medium body strength, strong caramel flavor, vanilla, but not well combined; a bit too bitter, and, mostly, a rather unpleasant sweet liquorice finish. Not convincing.

BPW #71 On tap at New Holland Brewing Company. Appearance is red leaning towards amber. The flavors and aroma are rich oak and sweet malts. The mouth is a little warm with a good dryness.
