Commercial Description:
This stout is sheer beer poetry. Let it warm to about 45 F and pour it into a glass to fully experience its rich, roasty flavors and hints of coffee and chocolate. One glass and you'll agree: The Poet is truly a rich, creamy brew of epic proportions.

Bottle... Black ale with a mid-sized, frothy, well-tanned head. Good retention. Milk chocolate and caramel aroma. Well rounded, burnt, chocolaty notes in the flavor. Medium bitter with good balance. Medium to full-bodied with lively carbonation. Roasted, mildly burnt, lightly bitter finish. Lots of milk chocolate overall. Reminds me just a bit of Weyerbacher’s Old Heathen. Thanks go out to WBC for the bottle!

Almost black with a creamy head. Aroma is roasty and sweet chocolate. This beer is very smooth and silky (a bit watery though) with a nice soft chocolate flavor with a little bitterness on the end. New Holland is quickly becoming another of my favorite micros. 12 oz bottle, $3.50 at the Winking Lizard Tavern (Crosswoods).

MBG 06. Black, creamy small white head. Very roasty, chocolate aroma - nice. Very milk chocolate taste, creamy. Wonderful dry finish. Tons of flavour. Really nice stuff, I loved this one.

Draught sample at MBG 2006 Summer Festival. Looks like cola in the glass. Malty aroma with roasted notes and a bit of smoke and coffee. Thinning body. Standard sweet stout flavours - roasty to start, some chocolate and coffee, and a moderately dry finish. Not bad, but pretty unexciting.

Draught. At 2006 Michigan Brewers’ Guild Festival. Opaque brown-black, bubbly, with an average creamy tan head. Roasty and nutty aroma, a wee hint of cola - bitter, decent, not exceptional. Taste is nutshell bitter, roast malt, some dry hops and a hint of molasses in the medium-long finish. Unmemorable body and mouthfeel, somewhat dry, bitter lightly acidic finish - I was left with the impression it’s a tad soft and watery, nice bitterness though.

Michigan Brewers Festival 2006. Black body with a small tan head (3+). Sweet mocha aroma with very mild roast. Thin, dilute roast and muted chocolate in the flavour. Average palate needs a bit more body for a stout in my mind. Pleasant but underwhelming. 7/3+/6/3/13

Bottle. Pours a very dark black body with a medium-sized creamy, tannish head. The aroma is quite pleasant - has chalky fruit, cocoa, and oatmeal. Sour malt flavour with mild chocolate and toffee roastiness. Good. Purchased at Bello Vino, Ann Arbor in April 2006.

This was a very ho-hum stout. It reminded me of Bell’s Java Stout as far as flavor goes, but it wasn’t that strong (or interesting). The pour was dark, with a tan head. The aroma was not good at all, and thankfully the taste didn’t match the smell. The flavors were plenty of coffee with a little bit of grassiness mixed in. Not a great product in my opinion, and there are much better stouts out there at this price."
