Pours dark black/brown with deep ruby edges and a really dense (maybe too much) head. Actually, I poured the last few drops onto the head and rolled to the side instead of falling through. Taste is a tannic bitterness on initial contact, but almost immediately melds into a brown-sugar sweetness. Noticeable malt, raisin, chocolate, and perhaps caramel throughout. While not overly sweet--which is good, because I’m not that fond of sweetness--it left a sugary taste in my mouth for quite some time after finishing it. whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 1, 2005 Dark brown body with medium carbonation and a thick, rocky beige head. Aroma of rum raisin, creamy dark chocolate, and sweet roast. A nice malty stout with abundant raisin character, medium sweetness, and a moderate, restrained roast profile. Creamy texture with decent fullness. Good, tasty beer.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 27, 2005 Slight sourness in the nose subtracts from otherwise tempting aroma of vanilla bean, dark chocolate. Full bodied, nice aggressive roastiness. Great sugary sweet finish. Nicely done. DrnkMcDermott (1852), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 24, 2005 Updated: Nov 15, 2009Bottled. U.S. Beer 24 of 31 for American Beer Month! Sweet roasty mocha java smell when the bottle pops open. Pours a nice black with barely visible red highlights, tan head seems a bit too rocky. Taste is, well, a bit of aq comedown after the fine presentation. It is nicely roasty, with a mild astringency. Pouring the second half of the bottle does give it something of a "Guinness cascade." Light English (Fuggles?) hops make it a nice beer. Metalhead (571), Lake Zurich, Illinois, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 15, 2005 A solid stout, with complex roasty notes that aren’t overpowered by a lot of lactose sweetness like a lot of other stouts - still, it’s sweet enough to avoid being over-dry - nice.
