cathcacr (513), Portland, Oregon, USA Nov 19, 2007 On draft; I asked the servers what they had that was at least as big and bold as the Double Bastard they had, and this fit the bill. Huge flavors, rich mouthfeel, actually sweet for a BW, almost like a peaty smoked Porter. For a BW, it presented very dark, more like a Porter in appearance. Most delicious, though really more of a sipping beer to slowly savor. This is about as big-flavored and hard-hitting a beer as I’ve had. Reportedly made for the Horse Brass’s Don Younger. ndubs360 (57), portland, Oregon, USA Mar 10, 2008 Sampled at the 2008 barleywine festival in portland... pours a dark brown with a red hue, no head whatsoever, i think because it was brewed in 1998, it lost most of its carbonation. Strong taste of cedar, burbon, and hops. Smooth as silk and no taste of alcohol whatsoever. awesome barleywine. harlequinn (2746), Tacoma, Washington, USA Jan 12, 2006 This was quite yummy. Lots of dark fruits, raisins, prunes and plums, with just the slightest bit of an almost kenya aa wineyness in the finish. Lots of nice brown sugar and candi notes are present throughout, with some molasses smoothed over fresh bread. Nice spicy hop bit when it is all said and done and I really enjoyed drinking this out of everyting else I tried. Angeloregon (1823), Portland, Oregon, USA Dec 4, 2007 On tap at the Hedge House in Portland, Oregon--Ultra dark brown viscus body with a thin tan-gray gripping head. Potent hops and rich caramel malt nose. Big lacing in glass. Like a grapefruit soaked in chocolate and caramel. Warm, boozy, spicy hop finish. Yum! boFNjackson (502), Portland, Oregon, USA Jul 18, 2008 PIB, tap... Poured dark, reddish/brown with a beige head. Aroma is very unique, like bitter, tart cheese and cocoa. Palate is intense and assaults the mouth (one that clears the nasal passage way). Flavors of warming, smooth alcohol while buttery toffee-malt that comes to play, and some bittering hops. Nice to take slow and very enjoyable.
