awaisanen (1279), Irvine, California, USA Jan 31, 2008 On tap at the brewpub. Pours a ruddy tobacco brown color with a finger of creamy beige head. Clean, malt forward aroma with a moderate dark bread-like sweetness. Some toffee characters as well. The malt character is nice and rich and thankfully isn’t dripping with caramel malt sugars, but it definitely could use more Munich malt. Medium bodied, softly carbonated mouthfeel with a soft, melanoidin rich texture. Sweet and malty, with a nice toffee and borderline chocolate flavor. While sweet, it has more of a dextrinous character and doesn’t come across as underattenuated. Some gentle herbal hops dry up the finish slightly. Doesn’t really develop any of the complex grape, prune, or nutty malt flavors that some of the best doppelbocks feature, but still a respectable example overall. goldtwins (4078), Nesconset, New York, USA Jan 6, 2008 Tap @ the brewpub. Poured a clear deep chestnut color with a thin off-white head. Semi-sweet malt aroma with notes of toffee and a hint of coffee. The flavor had notes of dark fruit, toffee and milk chocolate notes that showed on the finish. Mild warmth with a medium body. Semi-dry. JohnC (2220), Mission Viejo, California, USA Jan 5, 2008 Chestnut red pour with a one finger white head, this brew is softly sweet and nicely balanced. there’s not a whole lot of bitterness, but the sweetness along w/ the hint of chocolate in the nose make it tasty kp (8400), Woodstock, Georgia, USA Dec 12, 2007 Date: 12/02/2007

BBB63 (4195), La Porte, Indiana, USA Dec 5, 2007 OC Tour, tap at brewpub: Deep copper hue with an small head and okay lace, a bit oily. The aroma has notes of honey, caramel, toffee, allspice, pomegranate, heather, and leather. The taste starts with a heavy malt character with a spicy kicker. Some bitters and earthy notes as well. A bit boozy and phenolic. The mouth feel is lush and warming, sharp bite on the finish. This is a tad different for the style but quite tasty.
