Commercial Description:
It has been a year since we released ’00 and, as promised, we have brewed up another “extreme” Storm. Like its predecessor, only 20 barrels of ’01 will ever be brewed. Five malts and three hop varieties, along with a special ingredient chosen for the ’01, combine to create another exceptional and unique beer. It was brewed during the winter of 2001 and aged for almost a year before its release. Like most products with such robust ingredients, time increases the complexity of the ’01 and allows more subtle characteristics to be noticed as stronger flavors subside. Although ready to drink now, this beer will continue to get better for years to come. It is extremely limited, extremely strong, and extremely original, because as we like to say around here: “It’s All About Extremes!”

Sampled at MN Ratebeer Winter Gathering in Maplewood, MN and supplied by tytoanderson. From a 750 ml bottle pours a hazy copper amber brew that is quite thick and with no head. Aroma of powdery caramel malt, toffee, some raisins and ripe figs. Taste is thick, full bodied, no carbonation with flavors of chalky caramel malt, a touch of butter, and some light banana esters. Finish is smooth, with an earthy herb character that goes well with the high alcohol warmth. Special thanks goes to Tyler for sharing this rare and retired brew.

Mn Winter RB Gathering. THanks to tytoanderson for sharing.. Very thick caramelly sweet nose with a good dose of alcohol and port like aromas. Very sweet, but overpowering. Nice port like consistency and flavor profile. Very nice. Now if I could just find my RBSG notes for the rest of the line.

750ml corked colbalt blue bottle from Cryotek shared with the MN RB crew. Oxidized, but not in a bad way. Aroma of caramel, toffee, sherry, figs oak and alcohol. Pours a cloudy red/amber. Minimal carbonation and no head. Flavor was pleasant. Caramel, toffee, cut grass, pine. The hops ehld up pretty well after seven years. Some alcoholic hotness. Thick. Slightly chewy. Finishes with a slightly distracting fusel hotness.

MN Ratebeer Winter Gathering, January 12, 2008. Thanks again to Tytoanderso for this one and my final beer of the night. Dark copper color with no head. Slightly oxidized aroma and some caramel. Slightly better malt taste. More caramel malt and what seems to be some spearmint.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle. Dark raisin and fig aroma; very vinous, ridden with sherry, sweet wine, crusty toffee and worcestshire. Oxidized in a pleasant sense with a lovely sherry and bordeaux cask flavor, just slightly lactic with charred oak; strawberries, burnt caramel, bananas, oily pistachios, and light citrus. Still thoroughly complex, with a satisfyingly broad variance of sweetness and malt flavors. Smooth, full bodied, and viscous in the mouth; finishes with dry, earthy anise seed and lasting brown sugar. Impressive, if still a bit hot. Thanks for sharing, Tyler!

Thanks to tyler for sharing. Sweet body with caramel hints. Very nice body with light malty body, faint hops, and just enough sweetness.

Red colour with no head. A bit of a alcoholic nose with some sweetness. Thinish body but nice flavour. Has some sweetness of quite a bit of malt. Some caramel as well.

This one had been sitting around for a while, and I finally had to crack it open. Pours out a beautiful mahogany with a slight lacing white head that quickly dissipates. Aroma is of dark fruits, fig, caramel, and slight earthy notes. Very smooth mouthfeel with the alcohol ever present, but never offensive. Taste has matured very well, up front earthy notes fade into dark fruits, caramel, fig, raisin, vanilla and a somewhat long and alcoholic finish. Too bad they only made this one once.
