Commercial Description:
It has been a year since we released ’00 and, as promised, we have brewed up another “extreme” Storm. Like its predecessor, only 20 barrels of ’01 will ever be brewed. Five malts and three hop varieties, along with a special ingredient chosen for the ’01, combine to create another exceptional and unique beer. It was brewed during the winter of 2001 and aged for almost a year before its release. Like most products with such robust ingredients, time increases the complexity of the ’01 and allows more subtle characteristics to be noticed as stronger flavors subside. Although ready to drink now, this beer will continue to get better for years to come. It is extremely limited, extremely strong, and extremely original, because as we like to say around here: “It’s All About Extremes!”

Very small head, very mellow flavor, rich, malty,Caramel, slight roastedness, alcohol isn’t noticable at all, very enjoyable. Thanks to Cquiroga for sharing this brew!

A big thanks to cquiroga for bringing this beer to the Woodshop tasting at Stuffed Sandwich in San Gabriel, CA. Clear brown color, malty, sweet tasty. This has aged very nicely.

Pours a cloudy burgundy colour with no head. The aroma was overwhelming, with heavy chocolate notes, some grahm cracker, and surprisingly, no alcohol. The hops are very subtle in this brew. Mouthfeel is almost creamy, with just enough carbonation (more than I anticipated) to let you know it’s still beer. The flavour was chocolate mostly, with hints of dates, grahm cracker, plum, peat and malt. Kudos to Newport Storm. I’m greatful to have sampled such a rare, delicious brew.

This beer was poured into a snifter with no head what so ever. There was a nice smell of chocolate and malt. It has a nice amber and color with a dark tint. The taste is of chocolate and malt and maybe some dates and figs

Bottle sampled on 8/9/06, thanks to OldGrowth: Pours a dark amber mahogany with a nicely-lacing light tan head. Aroma has lots of earthy dry aged caramel malt and a touch of dark fruity complexity. Body starts with a semi-sweet viscous earthy maltiness and a lingering milk chocolate finish with a touch of warming alcohol. A full, complex brew that seems to have aged pretty well.

Bottle. Courtesy of risurfer now known as desurfer. Thanks Todd! Vintage is 2001. Muddy brown, almost mahogany pour with only a slight foam ring around the edge of the glass. Aroma is dark fruits (raisins, figs), caramel, light toffee, stale hops, cocoa and sweet malts. Taste is slightly oxidized. Sweet malts, light cocoa, caramel, light cardboard, dark fruits and flat hops. A bit of alcohol as well. Body is slick and warming with light carbonation and a light-medium mouthfeel. Finishes with more alcohol warmth, light caramel, cocoa, dark fruits, cardboard and sweet malts. Not bad but I’m glad I had this now as it seems to be fading.

Bottle... Clear, dark ruby ale with no head. Estery, vinous nose with complex notes of sherry or port, vanilla, caramel, toffee, dried plum, dark raisins, dates and leather. The flavor is malty and vinous with good balance. Dark-fruit sweetness, but it’s bittered nicely and a touch tangy too. Full-bodied and silky with pillow-soft carbonation. The finish is vinous, chocolaty and alcoholic/drying. English style barley wine? Kudos to growler for allowing me to knock this one back with him!

Strong, pungent, floral hoppiness even after all these years. Dark pit fruits, some sweet nuttiness, alcohol and a touch of cork in the nose. Opaque brown body is topped by a low tan head. Raisins and other dark fruits feature in the nutty flavour along with plenty of sherry-like oxidation. Mild bitterness and notes of alcohol round things out nicely. Medium body is quite warm and carbonation is sadly fading. What beast this must have been and it is still quite enjoyable. Bottle sampled at the post-Mondial 2006 tasting.
