Pours a deep, cloudy dark ruby brown, large beige head and thick sheets of fine lace. Malty start, thick, rich, creamy top, and a dry hop spicy finish and the large ABV, warms the tummy when it hits bottom. One fine beer, thanks to my ’Beer Bud’ Venom. Beer Lover (23), Washington DC, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Jan 17, 2002 Another year, another extreme storm. Newport Storm 01 weighs in at a mighty 12.5% abv, and the alcohol heat can really be felt in the nose and in the high octane finish. This is a very complex and delicious beer with lots of flavor and character. I pick up big flavors of sweet malt, estery fruit, vanilla, toffee, pipe tobacco, chocolate, you name it. This beer is still a bit green in my opinion. Let it age another year or so, and those intese flavors will meld, mellow, and improve. By far, Coastal Extreme’s best product, and their only product really worth seeking out. Hugerat99 (26), USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 1, 2002 Wow! A friend of mine mentioned this to me and I drove to Rhode Island simply to get a bottle. The flavor of the malts is amazing, though I found the alcohol to be a little too apparent, more like a wine. It leaves a little too sweet of a taste on the palate, which is why I didn’t give it a 20. dirtymike (2018), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 18, 2006 Thnaks to TheBeerLover for the trade. Very dark ruby/brown. Small, white head meets an untimely death. Complex brew. Aroma: rich malt, roasty caramel/toffee, oak, dark fruits, nostril warming alcohol, and some nutty notes. Flavor: all of the above plus: bittersweet and milk chocolate, nice hop presence, and a kind of airy sweetness similar to marshmallows or cotton candy. When drank, the alcohol warms the soul instead of the nostrils. Full, balanced body. Truly an excellent barley wine. Have to find some more to see how a decade or so treats it. | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 20/20 | Jan 25, 2006 Newport Storm ’01 pours to a deep brown color with a slight tan head and a soft carbonation. When held to the light, this beer is a brilliant amber color. The nose on this beer is the first thing that gets your attention. Very big waves of alcohol strength marry with sweet malty aromas, and some yeasty/fruity esters. The palate is rich and delicious on this beer, with lots of big flavors, and a slick and oily mouth feel. Flavors of sweet malt, maple, pipe tobacco, toffee, prune, hints of chocolate and vanilla coat the tongue. Newport Storm ’01 finishes with big malty and complex flavors up front, then ends with a very warming, soothing high octane burn.
This is an extreme beer with big flavors, and big alcohol heat. Five years of age has made this a excellent barelywine/old ale. Match this beer with strong blue veined cheeses such as Stillton, or Maytag. unclemattie (2432), Georgia, USA

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Apr 5, 2007 Pours a cloudy burgundy colour with no head. The aroma was overwhelming, with heavy chocolate notes, some grahm cracker, and surprisingly, no alcohol. The hops are very subtle in this brew. Mouthfeel is almost creamy, with just enough carbonation (more than I anticipated) to let you know it’s still beer. The flavour was chocolate mostly, with hints of dates, grahm cracker, plum, peat and malt. Kudos to Newport Storm. I’m greatful to have sampled such a rare, delicious brew.
